I’m getting ready to unload a few of the bikes in my basement for spring.

One of these bikes is a Crusader which I picked up a while back and left it as is. I was intrigued by the “Made in Holland” decal and that it includes some typical Dutch features you don’t see in the Chicago area very often.

I saw the discussion about this bike brand / model here. There were some questions whether the components were original or added later. This bike confirms and proofs that the Magneet rear light, Magneet lock, Fako front light and Fako generator seem to be original to the bike.

This bike also includes a Sturmey-Archer AW 3 speed hub from 1959.

When the weather warms up I’ll probably post it on Craigslist and Marketplace FB but for now I thought perhaps some of you would might enjoy seeing it posted here.









Of course it has to include a Schwinn saddle. So common to see this in Chicago.

Despite my stable cosisting of just race bikes, I love these town and touring bikes for their real functionality and usefulness, while looking beautiful with their details. My experience had been, they look even better when seen in person.
Many people here in the US don't really get interested in bikes like this because of their more "pedestrian" nature, compared to race or sport bikes.. The thing is, most bikes in Europe are of this type and race bikes are actually quite rare to see on the roads or in the cities.
In all the trips I took to Italy, France, Spain, the UK, Belgium and Germany, I honestly hardly saw any race bikes in the cities and country roads. All were bikes like this and even simpler. And the very few race bikes I did see, were modern CF bikes being ridden by race clubs in training peletons.
Maybe the Europeans are more honest with themselves and the only reason they will own and ride a race bike, is when they plan to actually use it in races.

My guess is that the one (and only) thing the original owner “upgraded” was the saddle.
