painting the Kilo TT

This project started out with a trip to the Attic at the Bike Exchange. There’s all manner of bike parts, wheels, frames, and Misc. stuff up there and always something new to see as we continue to get donations from all over.

What caught my eye was an orange frame that was built for a single speed set up. Called a Kilo TT, it has track geometry and is light weight for a steel frame, not like a lot of the cheap fixies we have lying around that are gas pipe. It also has eyelets at the dropouts and can be fitted with a rack. Apparently lots of folks use them as fixies / single speeds and they can supposedly be built up under 20 lbs. I was looking for a fixie frame that I could do a custom paint job on and this was perfect.

I decided to save the decals so needed to use orange as a base for the new paint scheme. The first step was re priming the shiny areas. Since I was going to spray a white base coat I primed everything including the original paint leaving the original orange on the head tube and around the decals. Next I sprayed a coat of white which will brighten all the colors to come.

Next came the colors seen here, Rusoleum orange and Behr yellow. At this point it looks like candy corn. Next will be the fun part, squirting Joy dish wash soap all around then Painting everything black. Stay tuned.

That's a nice looking frame you have there and the paint job looks to have turned out quite nice. I am interested in seeing how the build progresses.
Best, Ben
BTW, is it a 650 or 700 front wheel and do you have the original fork?

Looking forward to the finished paint job!
It looks like an aluminum frame, will a magnet stick to it?

Nice save!

I have a Kilo TT that I bought as a frame and fork back in 2008. Bikes Direct sold unbranded ones for $215. It’s a very nice riding frame and handles well. I use it for early season rides and for ice cream+cake runs.

Looking forward to your build. Do you plan to add a clearcoat when the paint is finished?

Thanks for the coments folks.
All I have is a frame . IIt will get a 700 c fork Probably an alumiinum one I found at the Bike Exchange.

It's a steel frame and pretty light. Just over 4 lb.
I am trying to keep it as light as possible , hopefully under 20 lbs. complete

The next step in the painting is to drizzle dish soap over the frame then spray with flat black, and immediately wash off the soap leaving a neat pattern.

After that it will get a clear coat to seal in everything.

I have never done this before so cross your fingers and wish me luck.

Well, the candy corn bike is just about finished. All I have left to do is put some spacers on the stem and install the grips. doing the drip paint technique was pretty easy. Just squirt some soap on the painted frame then spray with flat black followed by a thourough rinse. After giving the paint 48 hours to dry I washed the frame again in the shower with Dawn soap and hot water followed by a final rinse and dry and a clear coat of Rustoleum Automotive Clear.

The build was quick using parts from the Bike Exchange , including light wheels and Hutchinson Equinox 23's, a Titec (titaniun?) stem and Carbon fiber "Monkey Bars". The fork is aluminum and came painted that way. The crank is light and beutiful. I have no idea who made it. The chain ring is gold to add even more bling as if this bike needed it. the brakes are Shimano Ultegra, the levers STX.

As it sits in the pictures it weighs in at 19.5 lb.

I want to do another frame with this paint scheme . Next time I will use a solid orange base coat . I'm going to put some Calvin and Hobes stickers on it. to honour my all time favorite comic book heroes.

Next up is a 1958 Schwinn World Traveler I brought home to work on while the paint dried on the Mercier. all I have lerft to do on that one is clean up the wheels and hook up the SA 3 speed cable.

Great job! You're inspiring me to do something similar. Looking forward to seeing it with the Calvin and Hobbes stickers. I loved reading those comics as a kid and occasionally return to them. I illustrations are beautiful.
