Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's causing the squealing?

After spending the past 20 years on a mountain bike, a hybrid, and a flat-bar, I'm finally getting used to a road bike again, and I love my new (2006) Giant OCR C3...but I've never had carbon before and after a week of riding, the squeaking and squealing coming from the head tube/fork area (?) is driving me nuts...it only squeaks when I'm grasping the drop bar with both hands but it is especially obnoxious when I'm standing and hammering away...sounds like carbon parts rubbing together...is this normal break-in stuff? Anybody have any ideas what's going on?

Sounds come from all over.

Some things to check, in no particular order:
- BB
- Crank arms
- Chain ring bolts
- cleats & pedals
- cassette lockring
- wheel spoke tension
- quick release (dirty contacts?)

I've experienced that creaking sound on 2 bikes, 1 carbon, 1 alu.. The Alu bike it turned out to be the cassette lockring needed tightening. The carbon bike, it was the rear wheel spoke tension. Both increased in volume when I stood and pedalled. Others will tell you it was their cleats, quick releases, etc... Many things to check.

Sounds like Ned Beatty is inside your frame. Cut the "standing and hammering away" and he may shut up.

Tighten the stem bolts. Sounds like the bars are loose.

No catastrophe here...just lots of silicon grease needed in and around the stem bolts, head tube and fork solved the prob...the LBS had 3 versions of my OCR C3 and I asked to be sold the 1 that had never even been test-ridden...therefore, being a 2006 and sitting awhile, it was a bit "dry"...thanks for your tips, grahny and big chainring...
