Steve Bauer - LA,CA

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/la...498321148.html

"I am a female rider looking to pass this bike on to another female rider, or a gender non-conforming person that this bike will FIT (Key word: fit). The saddle, handlebars and frame size are all women-specific (fit to the measurements of a small-sized person). I am 5' 6" and athletic. I purchased this bike in Montréal in 2009.. it has been a lot of places with me. I have a lot of memories and nostalgia connected with this bike therefore, I want to find it a good home to someone that may just be getting into riding that perhaps needs a commuter or fun wheels to spin around town. I do 20+ mile rides on this bike 2-3x per week with 1,000ft+ elevation gain on neighborhood hills... so I can confidently speak to this bike's usability.
I do understand, that yes, it is an old bike. It is a steel frame that shows signs of wear, the other components show signs of wear. HOWEVER I have been active on this bike for the last 13 years and have KEPT UP with the maintenance (replacing cassette, chain, tires, tubes, replacing a wheel, replacing the hood covers to the originals, cleaning and oiling the drivetrain, keeping it tuned, etc.). Because I recently replaced both tires in the last month ($175) with the front wheel's rim tape replaced, and had it tuned in the last 3 months, I am asking $100.
Down tube from middle of crankset to edge of frame tube @ seat post measures 49cm
Saddle is a Specialized Lithia Comp Body Geometry size 155 (comfortable if you have wide hips)
Saddle comes with a saddle post lock and can be adjusted (go to your local bike shop for assistance)
Handlebars at their widest width measure 41cm across
2 semi-new tires Vittoria Rubino Pro 700x25c
2 new tubes front and rear
Campagnolo brakes front and rear
water bottle cage that matches the bell (for aesthetic)
Pedals can be swapped out for clip-ins (not included). I rode with clip-ins.
I'm throwing in a rear light, spoke light (for night rides) and handlebar caps for free
Do you have use for this bike? Can you make it your 'own'? Could be a 'project' bike and would look nice with a new frame paint coat.. Are you within the 5'2" to 5'6" range and are female or gender non-conforming? This bike has many more miles to go and I only want to hear from serious inquiries only. Thanks for looking."

Wow strange low end mix of parts for a custom built frame - especially that steel knurled headset, Chinese bar and stem. I am trying to remember who built these for Steve? I think it might have been Marinoni? Either way the frameset is worth more than $100!!!

My 37 year old 5'6 male friend has rode bikes his entire life. He always gets a laugh out of the whole "girls bike" "boys bike" thing... Small men ride bikes and so do tall women! When will people learn! But I do enjoy what the seller is doing with that Bauer, the gesture is thoughtful.

@Jazzyg72 - Perhaps @T-Mar can recall who built the road frames for Bauer but I believe they were Japanese (Mariushi?) made.
@bertinjim may know more about the better Bauers and he lives right near where Steve lives now and I believe he knew Bauer back in the day. I was told that Serotta made the Bauer track bikes and that there were some special order ones made in Italy but can't recall the source of that info. Since Bauer grew up in the village of Fenwick where I live I hear a lot about him and his bikes but nothing is ever sourced. We hear his bikes were hand made for him by Marinoni (or that he built them all by himself!) but much like every Miele offered for sale was "handmade in Italy" there seems to be limited documentation on Steve's bikes.

That's not a custom frame. It's a lower end, standard production frame, circa 1988-1989. Most of the Steve Bauer models that surface from this period were manufactured by Maruishi but they did contract to other companies.

The cosmetic condition is rough and despite the seller's claims, I'm leery about the mechanical condition given the inner chainring wear. Still, most members would probably ante up the $100, just for the Cobalto brake calipers. The frame itself is not that great. It's a plain gauge CrMo. The Shimano Exage Motion components are OEM.

If anybody is interested in one of these, in a slightly larger frame, one should be available for sale soon. The next time that my son comes home, I'll be doing an overhaul on one for the father of one of his friends. Once I get it, I can post it and could probably facilitate the purchase and or box it for shipment.

If height were the only factor in bicycle sizing, if men and women of equal height had, overall, the same proportions, then this would be a valid point. But proportion of height is what distinguishes, or should distinguish, "women's specific" bicycle design. The example Bauer at hand actually is NOT a good example, in that the top tube and seat tube appear to be almost the same length (if anything, the top tube may be longer). It is indeed just a small-frame bike. But women's specific designs, beyond pastel paint jobs and pink handlebar tape, are out there.

Thanks for info. I feel the same way about the brakes but I dont want to break her heart! Ironic that @machinist42 just posted a new Bauer listing today.
