Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Shoes?

My shoes are Shimano SPD-SL and I have no idea what mileage is on them. I would roughly guess only about 7-9 thousand. They look pretty good and there is no sign of deterioration. I was away from cycling for a few years and returned this spring. I am riding 5 or 6 days a week and 3 or 4 days I ride between 20 and 35 miles. I have begun to have pain in the ball of my feet, corresponding exactly to the 3 clip in points, and it occurs after I have gone about 20 miles. I have no other physical sign of fatigue or over doing the mileage so I thought it must be time for new insoles. Well, got those and the problem persists. Is it possible the sole of the shoes is itself broken down?

You can buy new shoes but I think you probably need a new cleat set! Change them or you can go SPD cleats and never have to change them again!
