Smart Trainer or MTB

Hello,

As the title implies I am looking for either a smart trainer or MTB. I am looking at the Vitus MTB range for 2019 HT and an Elite Direto. This isn't some, "porque no quiero los dos?" scenario. Haha. A little about me: I currently weigh 67.13kg with an FTP of 316. I do not race road and I do race cross. I have no desire to race MTB. My endurance is there but my skills could use some work. I am finishing this CX season off strong. I thus far have picked up some points and looking to get more to upgrade to cat 3 before this season ends. By no means will I be upset if this is not accomplished; I will be a 3 by next season closure.

Both items are in the 8-900 dollar range. I currently have a Cyclops fuild trainer 2 with a power meter on my road bike that I couple with Zwift. I have seen great results from this set up thus far and want to only be on the trainer for 2-3 sessions a week for structure during the winter. Otherwise I have made it a goal to ride outside more often.

My only hesitation for getting the MTB would be the lack of use compared to my road and cx bike. I only really plan to use it during the winter.

Cheers!

Go with the smart trainer, it will also be good for winter like your MTB but also for rainy days, cold days, or just days when you are too lazy to go out but still want to train

How someone would even consider a trainer upgrate over getting an MTB is beyond my comprehension.

So I may not be a good one to answer your question.

It would help if we knew what region you lived in, Northeast, Southwest, etc since winter weather can really cut into available riding time.
I live in the Northeast, Catskill Mountains where winter brings cold temps, snow and ice. For the past 2 winters, I relied on a fat tire Mtb to keep me in shape but this year, I bought a Wahoo KickR and plan on using it to Zwift indoors but only to supplement my outdoor riding

If you have some nice off road trails in your area, then get a MTB and enjoy riding outside.
