Simplex SLJ FD.... is this bent?

No scratches or marks to indicate an impact or anything, but the other (though slightly different) SLJ FD I have isn't like this.... Is this bent, or is it supposed to be like this? I can't really tell from looking at the photos on velobase.... Thx!

All four of my SLJ FDs are straight and parallel. Way back when, some people used to slightly angle the outer plate like yours to supposedly improve shifting off the outer ring. They would use rag covered pliers or clamp in a vice and bend away. You could do the same but in reverse if you don't like the look or function.

I would say, try to tune it up the way it is.

I sometimes apply such a bend in order to better control the chain from possibly over-shifting past the big ring. It works!

The front edge of the cage isn't affected much by cross-chaining, so the opportunity to better prevent chain jump is there without any likely possibility of the chain rubbing.

So I would leave it as it is, unless you're having difficulty completing adjustments without rub at that location.

Aha. This FD came off an obscure Valgan I'm 'restoring', so I'll leave it and see how it works. From the wear on the chainrings off the bike, toe-strap wear on the crank arms, etc, I think it was a pretty well-used, but cared for bike (not to mention it came apart really easily in spite of having been through a flood then stored for the past 15+ years- everything was well greased), so not unlikely that a PO modified it. And now I'm tempted to do the same to the SLJ FD on my PX-10 as I very occasionally lose the chain off the large ring.... Thanks, all!
