Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Broke a spoke and blew out a tire today

Broke a spoke on the rear tire today. 15 miles from home. Twisted the spoke around another to keep it from banging around. Wheel was way out of whack, but I figured that if I went slowly I could get it home. About a mile later...BAM! Completely shreaded the rear tire. Had to call the wife to pick me up (luckily she was at the gym a couple miles away). Took the wheel to the LBS and they replaced the spoke and trued the wheel for $20. Bought a new tire, size 25. So now I'm running a 23 on the front and a 25 on the rear. I think the spoke might have been damaged from when my RD broke off a while ago and got twisted up in the wheel. I used to run 110psi on the 23 rear. It's 100 psi on a 25, right?

Roughly. But not all tires are sized the same.

Right. Just a few lbs less with a 25.

I would watch your wheel carefully. That spoke being damaged from the earlier incident makes sense. But if wasn't damaged, one spoke going often means another one of two might follow.

Did the tire simply rupture, or did it pop out of the rim?

I'm wondering if you hit something that broke the spoke and partially dismounted the tire at the same time...

The wheel went so far out of true that it was rubbing on the frame. Ripped a hole in the side of the tire.

Did the shop examine the spokes in the area of the broken one or just replace the one? If one spoke was damaged when the hanger broke there may be a few more getting ready to break.
