Five gears in the rear? How primitive! Ancient history! I have a narrow 6 on my road bike and a 7 speed cassette on the MTB. And I use the 14 and 18 tooth cogs occasionally, not just 42/16 all the time. Gotta love the new tech! 😊

In the 10-speed, friction shift, single pivot brake, pre-mountain bike era, things were more forgiving. As were people.
Back then shifter cables and brake cables were different. As far as I can remember they've always been different, and I'm ooooollld. And very obviously we're talking about present day cables in this thread so no one really cares what 'might' have been 40 years ago.

I just have the one bike with friction shifting... my 1975 Motobecane Mirage which by some miracle I still have. Friction shifting seems like it's a bit of a lost art. I enjoy riding and being able to shift quietly.

New bars, brake levers & grips. Fork & front wheel replaced 35 years ago after a drunk landlord squished them.

No, the @$$4073 denied it. He was selling stuff my wife and I had in storage too. Luckily, that was 35 years ago!
