One of the dozens of Portland area board and tabletop game groups on meetup; it has 1800+ members. It's a thing.
I probably carry some emotional baggage from the ruthless cutthroat family Monopoly game sessions in my youth. In retrospect, I find it interesting that in a strict Baptist household where gambling, smoking, cards, and alcohol were taboo, Monopoly was encouraged... as long as the dice didn't stray from the game far enough to be considered evil. Weird.

Does anyone, of any age, actually play board games anymore? I know very few people who, if I suggested it, wouldn't look at me funny and think I was odd. And these are people who would have grown up playing board games. A few people might still play them with their kids, but adults with other adults? No.

No one lost Monopoly. It’s in every Walmart. And in the toy department, even, not next to the Geritol

I ride through Atlantic City, NJ, a couple of times a year and get to see the streets from the game.

If Monopoly was anti-capitalist, it probably accomplished the opposite of what was intended; the game is more of an instruction guide to capitalism than any kind of admonishment against it. I and everyone I knew played Monopoly as a kid, it was fun, a good way to learn how to count, as well as wheeling-and-dealing with other players. You can find Monopoly here in Japan, it's very popular, and I often play with my kids and their friends.

However, if you want a quicker variant, check out the card game Monopoly Deal! Our family enjoys it a lot

Our family saw one of those meetups once when we were out for burgers at a Fuddruckers. There were probably 10-20 people playing games in small groups at different tables/booths, and a big stack of extra board games because everybody had brought a few

There are definitely LOTS of adults that play board games. Sounds like you just don't know enough nerds.

The contemporary Monopoly game could still be interpreted as a cautionary tale about capitalism, when played cutthroat style. There's nothing in the rules prohibiting side deals, favors to certain players, etc. The whole idea is to emulate the same cronyism that fuels unfettered capitalism.
It's always a guilty pleasure to watch the faces droop on people who think the game is pure luck, or played strictly by the rules they see in the game instructions, only to find themselves quickly relegated to crappy, unproductive properties and bankrupted by cutthroat players. I've lost a few acquaintances over cutthroat Monopoly, especially in church groups. But I'll bet a handful of them learned from those hard lessons and went on to lead their own megachurches.
I've said for years, there is only one board game: Monopoly. Everything else is either a revision of Monopoly, or a desperate and failed attempt to *not* be Monopoly.

And after-dark neighborhood-wide tag. Brutal.

Here's a board game from Iraq, dating to around 2,600 BC.

The best cutthroat Monopoly strategy is more than just buying up every property you land on. Eventually you'll need to trade to acquire a monopoly.
And a mathematical analysis of the game, done back in the 1980s, showed a higher probability of landing on certain properties -- and these weren't considered the posh properties. Usually the best strategy was quickly acquire the low rent and mid-range properties, build them up ASAP, and then worry about the high rent posh properties later as other players folded.
Whomever designed the game either lucked into this particular arrangement of properties, or had analyzed probabilities of hitting certain squares before assigning property names and values to keep it interesting.

Yeah with eight of us kids that's a whole heap ton of sibling rivalry. My mom was super strict on not allowing fighting, so it all came out in the monopoly. You are right, the game is all about the side deals and bending the rules.
And after-dark neighborhood-wide tag. Brutal.

IOW good training for real life.

Yep... I was surprised too... It was called "The Landlord's Game" and used to promote Georgism, also called in modern times geoism.

I guess I should feel bad about all the fun I have had playing it. But maybe not, after all I am a Military Right Wing Capitalist with Expansionist ideologies... Ha

Another Boardwalk picture, bicycling related.

Of course sometimes properties are improved , not by building a hotel on the property, but rather through the use of dynamite.
