81 Comp GS Rides Again

In 1981 I worked at Alameda Bicycles in Alameda CA and purchased a Carlton Competition GS. My first race bike took me into 1986 when I was working at a Miyata shop and purchased a Team Miyata. I kept the Raleigh all these years and sold the Team Miyata in 1994 when I stopped road racing.
Today I spent all morning moving the Campy 11 speed Record/Chorus from a frame I designed and brazed in 2001. I figured 20 years is a good run and I wanted something "new". Pulled the Comp GS from my display and moved all the parts over to it. Rides seriously well and feels competitive to today's designs. Even fits 32mm tires. How about that?
I look forward to putting lots of miles on it in the coming years.

That year Competition is very racy with GS bits. Now?! The picture is not working for me.

I'm old and fat and slow. Need I say more? 11-32 cassette mated to a 50/34 crank and life is good. Enjoy the bike even if it is a bit more aggressive in geometry than I prefer, however with wider tires it is very manageable and goes down the road quite nicely. Had to replace the Campy seat post with a Gran Cru to get additional set back to keep my lower back happy.

Got any up-to-date photos of it?

My first 650b conversion was a ‘78 or ‘79 Competition GS. It really rode well, smoothing out that somewhat race-oriented geometry. I was running 38mm tires.
