Well...
After seeing a couple phones come flying out of the typical clamp and squeeze kinda mounts generally sold for this purpose, what I did was to simply buy a gel type case where your phone snaps into it. Then I just got a small roll of velcro sold for sewing and cut a coupla slots in the back of the case , threaded the velco thru the slots and now just strap it to the bike. It cant fall off and the phone can't come out and the gel keeps it stuck to the bike.
On the carbon bikes where the frame tubes of kinda square-ish, I strap it to the top tube right behind the headset. Perfect place, out of the way ,easy to see but off the bars. The only other bike I put it on, tubular frame, I strap it to the bars on top of the stem but I prefer the top tube when possible.

If you're just using to log data then put it in a zip lock baggie and place in your back pocket.

I use a Top Peak Smartphone holder(Neoprene & Velcro) mounted to the top of my stem.
It has a nice mesh pouch built inside where I can store 2 spare batteries, it's by far the best pouch I've found so far.
I threw out the packaging so I can't tell you the exact model name, but they do come in different sizes.

Doesn't it depend on what app it is?

I did 19 miles this morning with my iPhone in my jersey pocket. Running both Strava and MapMyRide. Worked perfectly. I've never had a problem with it not registering when in the pocket, though I don't use a plastic bag.

I used to keep my Droid in my jerseys without the baggie, & I had no probs except the sweat on the screen.

Cool, I never tried it because I assumed the worse. Good to know.
I know when gps first came out you literally had to be under open sky. Progress.

I don't remember the model I have, but I got it from Amazon, and they have quite a selection. I can't use a 'snap in' type case, since my phone is already encased in an Otterbox. I honestly don't think the mount would hold it on the bike in an accident or a really hard bump, maybe, but I haven't had any issues with it yet. I have two mounts, actually: one for the phone, and one for the phone-sized solar power supply that keeps it from draining the battery.

Halfway through reading the first paragraph of your post, I had to look at your username to make sure it wasn't something I posted but forgot about.

The case I mentioned earlier is a slide in pouch/holster, it slides & lock to the mount, & I can take if off & clip it to my shorts(or whatever).
Downside, I can see my screen, but knowing it's not going to fly off during my rides is comforting.

If you use your smartphone as your GPS, you're likely to run through the battery very quickly.
Your better off with a Garmin Edge or something similar, especially if you plan to track HRM and/or power data.

I burn through 1 battery in 6-7 hour top just with normal use, I had to buy 3 spares to be sure I had enough juice when I'm away from a charger, or electricity.

I used this Topeak iphone mount until I picked up my Garmin. Worked very well and only cost $27 at Performance.

Rode today with iPhone in jersey pocket; worked great; that's good enough for me.
