Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Opinions on Scott Speedster S30 for a beginner

Hi. I've been looking at this bike which seems to take a different approach component wise for it's price range. At $1050, it has a Shimano 105 front deraileur, Tiagra rear deraileur and shifters. I'm wondering where did Scott cut back to offer these components at a price point where you usually get Shimano Sora. One thing I'm wary about is the Truvativ TOURO crankset. Could this be it ?

I'm also wondering about how the geometry of this bike compares to an endurance bike, such as a Specialized Secteur.

And overall opinion on whether or not this is a good bike.

Thanks

I test rode it last summer while looking for my first road bike in about 10 years. It is a nice ride, shifted well, when you stepped on it, it just went. It felt stiff where it needs. I remember thinking that it was a great bang for the buck.

I have a touro crank on another bike and I have no issues with it. It is just a basic crank, that's heavy. Easy enough to upgrade at a later time.

Check around the Internet, I've seen last year's model on sale for about 850.
