Would it be possible to sand off the black anodizing, or would that be way too much hassle to consider?

On the faces it would be simple enough, but the ano does control a lot of corrosion compared to bare. I would leave it and feature the contrast.

don't sand, use the proper remover, or you can be judicious with Easy-Off oven cleaner.
