Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm a woman. I fire off snot rockets if needed. It's not just a guy thing.

I've seen many women do it while riding. Being a "lady" isn't required while suffering on a long cold bike ride.

The only guys I've seen do it are total d-bags. I have seen women do it and it is gross and repulsive for both.

Maybe I'd feel differently if I ever actually need to do this.

After riding / racing long enough (especially in cold weather) you don't think anything of it. However, if the person doesn't drop to the back or pull off to the side to do it then I would have to agree with the d-bag comment.

+1

When I first started cycling, I would carry a tissue. On a cold morning ride it would quickly become useless. Rather than sniffling, snorting, and having a little ball of liquid snot hang at the base of my nose, I watched the more experienced riders and learned to launch a rocket on the go.

It may seem gross and repulsive, but the alternative is using your gloves or jersey, which don't always work if you have a constant runny nose on a cold morning.

Was riding on the coast, passing by a jogger. She was early 20's, blonde, really attractive.

She glanced around to make sure nobody on the path was looking, leaned over and blew out a monstrous snot rocket.

Yes, it happens.

I've seen plenty of women do it during a hard ride. The d-bag move is when a person would release a snot rocket when someone is trailing them and they get the by-spray.

The women question is silly. Women have noses, too.

Um, what?

Blowing snot rockets is a necessary part of riding in cold weather for a lot of people. The temperature drops below the mid 60's and I turn into a mucus factory. Gross, but you gotta deal with it. No, it's not something you'd do in polite company, but c'mon, you're surrounded by other people in spandex getting all sweaty, hot and bothered. Context is everything.

It is possible to let one go in the middle of a paceline, but it requires care, the proper technique, aim, and a willingness to risk covering your own tights (or even bare leg) in slime.

I saw a woman firing off a snotrocket today ... well sort of saw, given that it was me doing it.

When riding at 7C, it's either let it drip, fumble around for a kleenex, or fire off snotrockets.

Cold weather? I get runny noses all the time even now in 95+ degree weather. Any time I ride more than about 20 miles my nose runs really bad. Not sure the reasoning(allergies?). My riding partner(a woman) doesnt think anything of me blastin em clean, she just has no need currently since her nose doesnt run.

I learned from a woman. The worst was when she shot off two snot rockets while in the paceline.
