Schwinn Breeze has become new summer project

This is the first bike that my wife has been excited about...so that is a great place to start!!!

Apparently, a good friend of hers sold it at a yard sale before she moved out of state...fast forward 2 years later...we now own a coffee shop where one of the usuals was talking about this bike he bought from a yard sale a few years ago. Anyway,t he has decided he is not going to do anything with it, so after a little more conversation, we realize it is her friends bike.

Thwy are both so excited about it, he gives it to her for me to fix up.
Now the fun begins.

Anyway, it looks to be all original. In fairly good condition. Here are some pics after a quick hose down to remove the cobwebs.

The rear wheel has 2 broken spokes and from what I can tell the SA is seized. Would it be easier to find a replacement or try to rebuild? Never worked with a 3 speed.

Could I convert it to a coaster brake single speed? I actually think she would prefer this.

And what should I do to the seat in order to condition/protect it without ruining it or the white?

Any help and advice is appreciated.

You sure can. A good Shimano coaster brake hub is really inexpensive. For my old Schwinns I laced up some modern aluminum rims with good stainless spokes. Lighter and less maintenance. Have fun.

Well, I decided to keep it as it was...as a 3 speed and bought a set of wheels and tires on the bay for little $. The tires are new. The rims are rust free. The SA is in good working order and comes with cable and shifter.

I have atarted to take the bike apart. I washed the seat with some dish soap and then gave it some neatsfoot oil...seemed to work.

Goal is is to get the frame completely stripped tomorrow, give it a good wash and then wax it to see what it looks like to start.

I will post pics all along for those that are interested.

So I was able to get it all “done” and completed in time to ride it down to her coffee shop and give it to her on her birthday.

Some details in the refurbish:
I bought a set of wheels that were in very good condition and the SA worked.
I polished the fenders with aluminum foil and chrome polish...AMAZING RESULTS.
I did the same thing with the handlebars...but the results weren’t nearly as good.
I purchased and installed a waterslide decal set after polishing the frame.
I brushed and painted the basket with “stainless steel” paint.
Regreased all the bearings, installed new cables, brake pads, tubes and tires.

It was fun fun and she is happy. All is good.

Good job! I like how you kept it as is rather than trying to make it to something it wasn't meant to be. I have a soft spot for the old Chicago built Schwinns which were built like tanks (and had the weight to show for it). I especially like the Campus Green ones like this one as that is my favorite Schwinn color. (I have a campus green Schwinn, too.) I'm sure this will be admired and enjoyed.

That turned out nice! If she finds the standard gearing too high for the local terrain, you can substitute a larger cog in the back. It is only held on by a snap ring and you may need to add a couple links to your chain, but it makes hills a lot easier.

I have my mother-in-law's old Breeze out in the barn. I'm not sure of the year, but it is red. It is in good shape, but my wife prefers her hybrid, so the Breeze just sits.

Did you raise the saddle? It looks low for her.

It could probably come up a little, but she prefers it to be a little low.

Maybe it acts like wax? I use furniture polish on my bikes, which is a wax solution.

i didn’t know what to use...the top was slightly cracked like an old leather saddle so I figured, why not? It seemed to help, but then a few days later it was back to the same.
