Toe clip toenail: is there such a thing?
About 10 or so years ago I dropped something on my left foot that was so heavy it caused the loss of the big toe's nail. This had happened to me twice before - the nail had grown back in a few months - so I wasn't worried.
This time it hasn't. It grows about halfway up the cuticle, then further growth doesn't attach to the cuticle; a nail that doesn't attach to the cuticle breaks off. This has repeated every 6 months or so.
A little after the drop I moved to town and started to bike a lot more - about 5K miles annually. I use toe clips and wear running shoes and socks.
Could pedaling pull back on the leading edge of the nail, interfering with attachment?
My foot feels okay. I don't feel a pulling on my nail. I've tried bandaging it.
I had a bout of toenail fungus 20 years ago: this isn't the problem now.

So this has been going on for ten years?
Sounds like you injured the distal half of the nail bed. That would have been during the period between 1-6 months after the trauma, if not with the initial trauma.

Have you ever consulted a doctor?

You damaged your toe 3 times, and you think toe clips are to blame ?
Toe clips don't even touch your toe.

I have definitely lost toenails due to cycling, but only from pressure because I was pushing on the front of my shoe. It doesn't sound like you have gotten that far yet. Last couple of times I have lost a big toenail, the old one didn't come off until the new one was full length. That really slowed down the process.

About.
Looks and feels okay.
I don't recall a subsequent injury.
That would take all the fun out of it. And also probably waste my time and money.
Over the course of 40 years.
They apply a little pressure on the tips of my toes - every stroke.
Do you mean the nail pressing into the front of your shoe? Is that a pressure injury rather than stress on the tip of the nail?
