Recently Moved Out To The Country
I recently bought a house and moved about 40 miles North of Detroit. It's pretty much all dirt roads and farmland. I've been using my Mountain bike for riding since I got here and absolutely love riding out here.
- There's a lot less traffic on the roads. No dodging drivers every 50 feet.
- The dirt roads out here go on forever. A lot of roads for long distance rides.
- Drivers are friendly. They move over, slow down, and wave to you instead of honking, yelling at you, throwing things, and flipping you off.
- It's very peaceful. No loud traffic noises or other noises related to the city

Low traffic can't be beat. Is it pretty flat around Capac? I rode a bike trail over near Port Huron last fall, it had a really tall train tressel over a creek near the north end of it.

I live in a similar area in Ohio. I love it. Seeing one or two cars on an early morning ride is the norm. I actually prefer riding on local county roads rather than trails. The trails can be rather crowded as their popularity rises. Then you're competing with horses, walkers, roller skaters, runners, people walking their dogs..........

Sounds like you need a gravel bike 
But yeah, I grew up in farm land in Mid-Michigan, I wish I still lived around those empty never ending, one mile grid pattern country roads!

The thumb area of Michigan has another virtue for 'bent riders: it's relatively flat. I ride around the Lansing area, and while there are a few trouble spots, you don't have to travel very far outside the city limits to find good roads with low traffic and courteous drivers.

I'm not actually that far from you in the Sandusky area. It's pretty flat but still some little rolling hills to break it up. Love the gravel roads but some with curves would be nice. Lol.

And yes, I finally got a cyclocross bike to ride these roads. Some of the gravel bikes are practically drop road mountain bikes.

Im not far from you guys either, Im in Armada by the Macomb Orchard trail. Nothing better than Sunday rides in the fall down some of these roads or the trail for that matter.

Same here. I'm in northern Oakland County, but in groups that I sometimes ride with we take the dirt roads up through Macomb Co. and into Lapeer Co., occasionally going to a destination stop in Imlay City. One problem I've had with the paved roads, though, is that there can be quite a bit of traffic since there aren't that many of them. I used to do the Peach of a Ride out of Memphis, but too much of the route was on state highways that get busy on nice weekends. Wide paved shoulders helped a bit, but I still felt uncomfortable sometimes.
