Hello all, a long wish has gone into reality and I got my first Pinarello 'spumoni', with the bright colours. Love it, and I suspect it to be a Montello of 1990/1991. It has a complete Shimano 6400 gruppo Ultegra/tricolore. Some pics! Advise appreciated!

Mine does not have any paint on the fork crown. You may be able to identify the approx year from the SN.

Thanks! Serial number on the bottom bracket is G0578. Does that indicate something? Date codes on the Shimano parts indicate 1991.
The tubing is Columbus SL CroMor, doppio pessore (double butted).

@LucasHartong - Well that is interesting info. My understanding is that the Montello was always SLX tubing. The color way may have been used on different models.
I am not familiar with the SN scheme, but others are. let see what other responses you get.

Thanks again. The only alternative I could come up with is an Asolo. Let's wait and see who pops up!

Cable routing through the top tube, in conjunction with a brideless BB shell and standard stay caps equals Montello. It has the SLX/SPX fork decal but the seat tube decal appears to be SL/SP. It's pre-1989, as they had introudced the eponymous, investment cast dropouts by1989. If that's the original fork decal, then it's a 1988 model. The caveat in all this is that my comments apply to the N. American models. Things could have been different in Europe.

Most likely not a Montello as it does not have the reinforcing triangular gusset on top of the BB shell.....
Still high up the model line as it has the full chromed rear triangle treatment (If it is original.).

Good eyes! That's not the bridgeless Pinarello shell but a standard shell without a bridge between the chainstays.

Also the seat lug isn't typical for the Montello (and Gavia) with the small Pinarello logo next to the binder bolt (see discussion here).



There seems to be a lot of 80's Pinarellos floating around with some details not a catalog match, making assigning a model challenging.

Um, yes and no. All the N. American market Montello that I've seen were SLX/SPX but there were SL/SP versions offered in at least some European markets. See the attached German advertisement. I don't know if it's a case of USA distributor Gita not importing all the models or a special request on the part of the German distributor. Regardless, they did exist. Variances between markets are one of the things what make C&V bicycles so interesting, or frustrating, depending on your point of view.

I think all my observations have been raised above.

The serial number is in a format that I haven't seen before, so that doesn't help with a likely build period.

Will be interesting to see if there is rifling in the seat tube which would indicate SLX tubing - probably not, going on the decal and BB shell.

The seat stay caps appear to be very pointed compared with other Pinarellos of the same era - not sure what this means, custom build?

Some of the decals suggest late 80's, but the Campy stamped dropouts suggest mid 80's...possibly some of the decals aren't original.

I've got a feeling it's a Treviso with internal cable routing circa '89. If you look at the '89 catalog the Treviso doesn't have a chainstay bridge (that I can see) or the 'winged' BB shell.

Pinarello: consistent in its inconsistency.

One thing for sure. It has the ubiquitous peeling seat tube decals. Do like the spumoni.

Almost identical to my Treviso in every way. As others have mentioned, the BB shell indicates it's almost definitely not a montello.

Well, the best educated guess right now is that it's an Asolo from 1991 or around that year, as that matches the bike most: SL or CroMor Columbus, Ultegra group... Working on the bike right now. Hope to post pictures soon of the result.
