Your vague recollection is now backed up with real evidence!

Although that doesn't seem to account for much nowadays.

Anyway, while it may have been a cheap solution, it also looks quite elegant!

The two or three that I've seen do not have such a thing on the small chainring. Then again, you don't typically see a guard on the inboard side of a small chainring.
