FAIRFIELD, IOWA -- While bicycle riding might be relaxing for most, it is causing a headache to some Fairfield Residents.

The Fairfield Police Department declared May “Bicycle Awareness Month” and have been writing up violators.

Fairfield Police Chief Julie Harvey says a number of factors led to this decision.

She said the city council received written complaints, many business owners complained to the police and there were also some bike accidents involving minor injuries.

“The whole thing is to make everybody safe. We don’t want to get a bicycler hurt. We don’t want to get a pedestrian hurt. A bicycle is just not going to win against a car. The whole goal is to make everybody safe,” Harvey said.
Yeah, right. So why aren't you cracking down on cars that swerve around cyclists with inches to spare?

We'll see if they post my comment to the article; I was pretty civil, but I blasted them pretty hard.

I found nothing in the story about cyclists being deported. Was it edited since your post?

I'm sure getting a ticket for riding my bicycle through a stop sign feels just like being deported for being in the country illegally.
(I have no objection to being asked if I rode my bicycle through a stop sign. I do look like a cyclist.)

Perhaps the comparison got lost. Imagine the following scenarios:

Police announcing a crack house sweep on MLK Day
ICE announcing Mexican heritage month with a series of illegal immigration sweeps.

Now please tell me how only hiding behind bushes and handing out tickets to bicyclists makes people aware of bicycles in any way other than, "man I shouldn't get on one of those"

@DX-MAN looks like they're eating all the comments.

Oh for chris' sake...despite the poorly written story, if you watch the video you see that the effort seems to be directed at people riding on the sidewalks in an area where doing so is prohibited (and posted on signs).

Harvey said they have issues about 35 written warnings, but only one ticket to a non-complying rider.
Wow, written warnings! You know who else started off with written warnings? Hitler, that's who!

No, the comparison was not lost. It just seems to me lame and whinny.

Maybe some of this enforcement effort is further evidence of the friction between the town and MIU?

Excellent point! The poor police could be frustrated at seeing people levitating without a license rise beyond their grasp.
