National Walk to Work Day - Friday 1 October 2010

It is National Walk to Work Day on Friday 1 October 2010

https://www.walk.com.au/wtw/page.asp?PageID=207

I live a 10-minute's walk away from work. I have thought about cycling, but it's not really far enough away for that. But 40 minutes of weight bearing exercise 5 days a week is a good addition to my day and compliments my cycling.

So participating in this event just seems like a natural thing to do. I like these days that encourage including exercise in our commutes.

But sometimes riding is more of a hassle than it is worth. When it would take longer to change in and out of cycling clothing ... and longer to put the bicycle in a safe place and lock it up ... it makes more sense to leave it at home and walk. When finding a safe place for the bicycle at work is difficult ... it makes more sense to leave the bicycle at home and just walk. Plus walking is good for the bones.

It's all good ... getting out in the fresh air, raising the heart rate, building up the bones, being able to think through issues and challenges at work ...

I used to be a runner way back when ... before I really got into cycling. Still love walking and hiking even though I can't run anymore.

I'm about 17km away from the office, a bit far to walk - but, weather permitting, I'll be happy to bike to work.

I thought it would be interesting to try walking to work sometime, but at 15km, it would take upwards of 2 hours at a brisk walk. I actually quite like walking, but 2 hours out of my day is a little much.

Sound like a good idea in theory, but a 15-mile hike before work is just not going to happen for me.

My break even point is about 500m.

I'm that lazy.

Wow, sometimes I wish I lived a little closer to work. I'm 14 miles.

It does bug me a little though to know many of my co-workers live within a mile or two to work but they won't consider walking or riding to work. Instead they brag about how low miles their cars have on them because they live so close.

I used to walk to and from work when I lived about a mile away. When I lived three miles from work, I'd take a bus in in the mornings, and walk home in the evening. It was downright relaxing, albeit slow. It's a very different experience from cyclocommuting.

Now I'm about 4.7 miles out, and the bike is just a lot more convenient.

Funny thing in Tucson is there are fewer sidewalks than bike lanes.

I guess I've been lucky with the jobs I've had where I just throw the bike in the break room or storage room. I'd wear my uniform or street clothes if it's close enough.
