Miyata ID Help

Picked this old green Miyata up today for free. I nearly hurt my back as this must be hi-ten or heavier. Anyhow, it has a cottered crank, stem shifters, suntour derailleur, DiaComp brakes, 5 speed freewheel, turkey levers, 27 inch wheels with non-quick release skewers with flywheel type nuts on the front wheel and an old school speedo with 54 miles on it. The white decals on the bike no longer have any visable lettering. I'm guessing this is their intro level bike or close? Anyone know the approximate age of the bike and the model name?

'70s for sure, probably mid-'70s. The serial number *might* narrow it down. No surprise about the weight; the plain-jane lugs and stamped dropouts usually befit a hi-ten frame, just as you supposed.

BTW, nutted axles don't have skewers.

Oh - can you post a pic of the head badge? That might help with the ID.

That's the earlier version of the Honor rear derailleur, so it should be pre-1976, maybe 1976 if Miyata was using up some excess stock. That should make either a Miyata S-1 or its successor, the Miyata MX-E. Both were the bottom of the line, adult 10 speeds. The serial number should allow us to narrow down the years.

The seial number indcates that the frame was manufactured during 1973 but the the number is quite high, so it could be a 1974 model manufactured in late 1973. Either way, it should be a Miyata S-1.
