Athens Twilight 2013
So who is going to spectate and who is going with the intent of qualifying?
The Beck boys and girls will have an RV in the bank parking lot at turn 4.
We have two riders qualifying on Friday AM -- one for the Men's Pro and one for the Women's Pro -- plus a bunch of other riders trying to get into the amateur final.
My plan is to walk to the RV, open up a cooler, and start watching at about 5PM on Saturday.
Come on by!

I'm stuck with some plans with the girlfriend, so no go for me. Looks like nasty weather planned too! Sure it'll still be fun though!

That was fun. Parked in turn 4 and standing on top of the RV. Our guy made it a while before his legs locked up. Laps were in the 29-32mph range. Ooof.
Wish all the races were like that. Huge crowd. HUGE.

The key is not to have fast racing, but to have a party going on around it. The race itself is secondary to the event. That's a mistake that a lot of bike race promoters make; they think that a great race will draw a crowd. Nope, beer and the possibility of a crash bring the crowds. Twilight pleases both sides: great racing for true race fans, and a party for the town. If it were just a bike race, it would be like every other race in America: crickets.
The streaming online was actually very good. I noticed some color balance issues between cameras, but they were able to follow the leader as he was lapping the field despite the fact that he was weaving his way through the back of the field. That's very confusing by itself, but they did it in the dark. Amazing.

There are some spectators that can actually appreciate watching the racers and what they are doing, but that's a 1 in 100 fan. Crashes and flash are what draws a crowd.
