Colorado Cyclist/Planet Cyclery Closing
Was just look for some new bike apparel online when I noticed that both places are closing down. Apparently this was announced just a few hours ago. I don't know if the 'clearance' prices are any good, but if anyone is interested have a look.

They affected my life in a major way. A couple decades back, I managed to acquire three of their plastic reusable clamshell bike shipping boxes.
Using shipbikes.com, I bought used bikes all over the country using the Colorado Cyclist boxes.
I'd ship an empty CC box to the seller with return postage enclosed. Seller packs the bike, attaches the label and drops it off at a FedEx. Then it lands back at my doorstep.
I have three Indy Fabs and one Serotta. All came in those boxes.

Sad to see Colorado closing, way back they were the Go-To online for decent wheels, they were very well built.

Very sad but this thread reminded me to see if Bike Nashbar was still around and it is! Though I see it's owned by Amain, which I'm familiar with.

Bike Nashbar used to be great, but it's no longer an independent company and it hasn't been for some time. A lot of their house brand cycling apparel was reasonably priced and made in the USA. It was very good value. I remember buying Nashbar brand windproof fleece for a very reasonable price. For a number of years it was my favorite cool weather cycling gear. Today all cycling stuff seems to be junk or is insanely priced.

They will be missed. The breadth of selection was a huge help and I enjoyed many sale opportunities there.
Sorry for the employees! Customer service was always prompt and responsive.

Wow, the end of an era for sure.
It's funny, but I think that Gen Zers might get a kick out of receiving and ordering from an old school printed catalog...

I just bought from Planet Bike and received from Colorado Cyclist a pair of GRX brifters. Good price too. Now I know why the price was good and I received from what I thought was a different company. I’ve bought separately from both for years.

Planet Cyclery was also located in Colorado and sells everything like a bike shope , while Planet Bike is in Wisconsin and specializes cycling accessories. Completely separate entities.
I remember CC as a go-to mail order store like Nashbar back in the 80's.

I used to really like the Colorado Cyclist print catalog years ago. I liked seeing their in house frames they sold and considered their "Macalu" titanium frames back in the day. In more recent years I found that their web site was not real pleasant to navigate and that sales were not that great. Also, I could never tell if they had gone more mountain bike specific or what. I did purchase an Industry Nine rear centerlock MTB Torch hub from them on clearance but think I still paid about 270 for it. Turns out I never did a wheel build on it yet since it is 8,9, 10 speed only for road. I have had better luck with Excel Sports Boulder with their special buys, I find that when I get an email from Excel Sports for tubeless or tubular tire deals where you get a pair at a special price, often this is a really good deal. But even here the buyer should beware because for example when I bought "OEM" 2 pack of Hutchinson Fusion 5 Endurance and Galactic TLR tires from them, I was impressed at first but then realized not much sooner that the tires had a nasty habit of developing tread separations which essentially meant the end of the tires (sometimes in as little as 500 miles of use).

I miss Nashbar, Performance and Pricepoint; now, two more to lament. I used to drool all over the CC catalog. Unfortunately every time one of these companies goes down, the prices at my LBS seem higher.

Harris Cyclery is gone. Fortunately someone is maintaining the website of the late, great Sheldon Brown's goldmine of arcane bike knowledge. Also gone is the business that specialized in selling small parts...and they had everything. If you needed a part with a weird thread pitch for some long forgotten French or Japanese bike they had it stock. This world sucks more everyday.

The heavily discounted pricing and the dwindling selection at Colorado Cyclist / Planet Cyclery have foretold this eventuality for a while. I bought my first upgrade wheelset from Colorado Cyclist in Christmas 2017, and other things over the years, so it is sad to see them go.

Their predecessor, Third Hand, is gone. Loose Screws is still around. Guess they didn't the memo, nobody is supposed to repair anything anymore. Sad
