Picked up this 1988 Ironman today. Full 600 Tri-Color group and 60cm in decent shape. Should clean up pretty nice. The Avenir saddle is missing the cover, so that's what they look like underneath. Tried just a quick spray to clean up the white hoods and they popped right up. That is very lucky because these hoods are almost non existent. My first Ironman.

NIce. You will love it. Looks to be very low milage with OG tires. Come springtime, with retensioned wheels, nice tires, a fresh Turbo or Concor, and your other bikes will be crying, neglected in the corner of the garage.

Yes, It's right on the edge of being too big for me. I usually ride a 58, but I do like a taller bike. I could probably force myself to enjoy it . It has some bumps and scars from the years, but overall is very good. Going to be a fun rebuild.

Update on the Prestige before I finish it. I read on the net that you could use the next speed up shifters with the "orphan" 7400 series RD. Since I had some 7 speed brifters on hand, I gave it a try so I would know. Survey says, ......not. Not even close. Now I won't have to wonder.

Coulda told ya. 7-8 speed DT shifters will work, tho. Or your favorite friction bar ends.

I wasn't go to use them, but I had to know for myself. Since it's a rare bike in good condition, I will keep it stock. The freewheel and chainrings might change, but that's about it besides the tubulars. The front wheel and it's match will go on in place of the originals. Campy Record hubs, the clincher version of the rims, and those tires sent to me from one that shall remain nameless. A 7400 with the long cage swap might go on some time in the future. I managed to acquire a RD-6207 with a broken limit screw along with some shifters and brake levers for $10. I repaired the limit screw so now the RD or just the cage is operational. Hmmmm.

Exchanged messages recently with HWSNBN and he mentioned that you had been gifted the Crime Against Humanity long cage 7400 RD.

Speaking of a long cage DA-7400, I examined the possibility while I was cleaning the one up on the Prestige. The donor cage to be used is from a RD-6207 600. The bolt holding the cage on the DA is countersunk. Not on the 600. You either have to drill a countersink space on the 600 cage and use the DA bolt, or file/grind off some metal from the top of the 600 bolt. Otherwise, the bolt will drag on the derailleur body.

(Says the guy who just built up a bike with 7410 DA with a 12-25, but really misses the 12-30 on a couple of his other bikes)

The subject RD is a hybrid/mongrel made with 7400 body and 6207 long cage. HWSNBN acquired it from someone and passed it along to Pat. Note that the body is the same as a standard 7400 so it won't take a larger gear, but the long cage means Pat can use his beloved triple with up to a 28/30 cog. For larger gears with a DA RD, best to locate a 7703 or 7803 which is a true long cage DA unit that willk work with a 30/32 combination.
BTW, unless your RD hanger is super short (e.g. Cannondale) 7410/740X/7700 will easily shift up to a 28 or 30 in both large and inner chainrings. That setup is on several of my own bikes.
You'll probably have to adjust the dropout screws to pull it back farther in the dropouts and tighten the B screw, but it works

Needing more range out of that top level racing RD? Well, you can put on one of the company's MTB from the same era, or swap a cage onto your RD. Go to Velobase and look at the long cage RDs around your RD. In the case of the RD-7400, the 600 GS RD-6207 will work. Same RD with different finish and no indexing. As mentioned above, some other issues. Work around those and swap cages. Now you have a DA GS RD.

This would be super useful for my 7410 setup. Just installed an 11-28 with a 52/42 crank, works great. Then I got a nicer crankset with 52/39 so thought "why not try that'? *Almost works* Just the slightest chain rub on the 39/12&11 combos, which you really shouldn't be in anyway. A GS rd would fix that though.

I think you can find 12-28 cassettes out there too. And yeah, I don’t have a need for a 53t either, dropping that down increases your chances of your RD having enough wrap for your gearing.

A friend’s Prestige. It needed frame repair, hence repaint. He says the fork was so good he left it chrome.
