1981 Trek 710, 56cm, 650B conversion, $1995, Duluth, MN
Fully restored and customized Trek 710, 56cm, converted to 650B. This was a pandemic passion project, starting with a 1981 Trek 710 with the following professionally done modifications:
- Cantilever studs added for 650B wheels
- Additional water bottle brazeons
- Chainstays dimpled to fit 42mm tires with fenders
- Rear dropouts spread to 130mm for modern drivetrain
- shifter stops on the head tube
The welding was done by Mark Nobilette and Yellow Jersey, and a complete respray with the period correct decals was done by Yellow Jersey with the original Imron paint. Frame and fork were professionally aligned while being painted.
Frame and fork are Reynolds 531. Seat tube is 56cm ctc, 57cm ctt, while top tube is 56cm ctc.
Additional upgrades/highlights:
- Pacenti Brevet 650B wheelset, with Son dynamo custom front wheel
- Rene Herse Cantilever brakes
- TRP brake levers
- Shimano Deore 10sp rear derailleur
- Microshift 10sp bar end shifters
- Nitto Technomic stem
- Rene Herse Randonneur bars, extra light
- Berthoud Aravis ti railed saddle
- Berthoud leather bar tape to match saddle
- American Classic seatpost
- B&M IQ headlight
- Velo Lumino taillight
- Swift Industries Peregrine handlebar bag
- Velo Orange front rack with integrated decaleur
- Nitto bottle cages
- Velo Orange hammered fenders
This is, for all intents and purposes, a new bike with all of the upgrades and paint. Most of the parts have fewer than 500 miles on them.
The one blemish is a spot on the handlebar tape where it slid while leaned, scraping the bar tape a bit and pulling the wrap. It would probably be fine with a rewrap that would make it less noticeable.
Pedals are not included.
Shipping is available via BikeFlights, and will probably cost a bit more than a regular bike with the fenders/lights/racks/bag.
Comfortable for miles and miles.
SON dynamo hub with Pacenti rim
custom brazed on campy style cable stops!

Modern update to 10 speeds and wider range rear end.
Most comfortable saddle ever. Ti rails, too!
