Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyway, I think the new Red looks good. At first I didn't like the looks of the brakes, but they have grown on me. Those cranks are sooo dead sexy that SRAM had to put the ugliest chainrings they could come up with just to prevent accidents from people staring at the cranks instead of looking where they are going....

I was talking to Competitive Cyclist on their FB page, and they seem rather sure that the 2012 Red '2nd generation' Front Derailleur won't work with any previous-generation SRAM shifter.

Damn.

That means if I want the new fancy-pants FD with built-in chaincatcher I need to either come up with a buttload of money and get 2012 Red shifters and FD (might as well get RD while I'm at it ), or I need to hope and pray that this makes it onto Force in 2013. What's the over/under on that? I really doubt it since this new Red arrived too late to be on 2012 model bikes.

I'm guessing the claim of improved front shifting came partly by way of changing the pull ratios (which would also mean the shifter). I'd give it another model year for the trickle-down.

The rep. did say that the 2013 crank had to be used with the new FD. If your in the big ring the tail of the FD kicks inboard and in the small ring it kicks out to stop chain rub.

Holy expensive. $350 for a mechanical rear derailleur?! $335 for a cassette? They're treading on Campy pricing now.

They didn't, atleast at our store... The Sram rep. stopped in to show it off and I happened to be there getting help with my fit.

Weight wasn't a concern and I wasn't even trying to get under 15lbs truth be told. I just like double-tap and got a good deal on closeout '10/'11 Force/Red parts.

So, perhaps I benefited from the new '12/'13 red group after all.

I've heard the pull-ratio is the same as the old shifters. I think they're trying to market it as incompatible, but it'll come out that it's backward compatible.

Red is nice and light, but they're insane if they think its worthy of a SR price point

Too bad I am a college student....I just shelled out $3,500 for this semester at ODU :/

Walt is awesome when it comes to service though, wouldn't go anywhere else for cycling gear.

He really does take the time to help. I'm trying out some new seats right now and him and his staff are such a huge help.

The pull ratio is the same, but I think the removal of trim is what makes the FD incompatible. I'm going to have to email Nick or Leonard at Velo News to get the straight dope, though.
