Interesting day!
After mountain biking for a few hours, I had to do some freeway biking due to a siezed idler pulley snapping the serpentine. Rode up I5 and climbed up an overpass to get to AutoZone.
The Trek 930 saved the day!
I have pictures but don't have 10 posts...

So your car broke down and you were able to get to AutoZone on your bike? Great. Did AutoZone have your idler pulley and were you able to make the repair on the side of the road to get going again?

A bike at the right moment is like a boy scout knife. About 35 years ago, my clutch cable snapped in downtown Ann Arbor. I had to speed-shift several blocks to find a parking spot, and parallel parked it without the clutch. Pulled the bike out of the hatch, rode to the "scene" to retrieve the retainer clip that fell to the ground (intact, whew!). Then rode out to the Dodge dealer on the edge of town to buy a new cable. Downtime aprx. 90 min.
These days, the truck we drive most of the time has a folding Mongoose and a spare helmet in the bed.
(Eek, I just realized, I think still I have that retainer clip in a drawer in the basement.....)

Too true I felt slightly more self-actualized after yesterday!

Bonus - tool collection enrichment. You're not thirty bucks (or whatever that breaker bar cost) poorer, you're one tool richer.

They had the serpentine and the pulley. Unfortunately they didn't have the lock washer for the pulley so I lubed it and crossed my fingers. Snapped the second belt a few blocks from home 🤪

It’s, it’s like a classic story. The bike is Lassie and it saved little Timmy from harm. Really loved the match match paint!
I had a good back up bike with me when I was returning my Dads thruck back to him. The engine was in trouble but he told me to “ see if you can make it home!”
Cant believe I did make it but really wanted to stop and just pull the 3 speed out and ride the rest of the way when I got closer, that engine was in it’s death throes.

Well done, not very common anymore, too many lads now days never get the mechanic thing, "I'll just call somebody if that happens".

I was on my way to The Bicycle Stand in Long Beach and heard this cascade of slapping.
idiot lights came on,
had a Good hunch what it was.
serpentine belt.
go to the bike shop.
then walk to the auto parts store.
unfortunately the neighborhood north of the bike shop gets patchy fast now.
double checked what tools I had.
called spouse to fetch what I did not have and need.
as a Front wheel driver
remove wheel, inner fender, loosen idler, tested bearing feel, OK, fit it on, tension, assemble the mess.
as it was a Sunday PM, it was me or Monday.

It is great to hear that you used the bike to get you out of a bad situation. It is even better that we have full documentation right down to the clever improvised method of caring the breaker bar set.
