Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What to wear over bib shorts in cold weather?

I've got a pair of bib shorts that I really like so I don't want to invest in a dedicated coldish weather bib. I've got a pair of long underwear from Target that I really like to wear over my bibs in 25-45F, but it just keeps riding down. I wish I could find a pair of just really light bib long underwear. Is there anybody that sells bib style long underwear/thermals? What are other people wearing?

Nothing.

Leg warmers go on underneath. I don't need anything over bib shorts north of 25-30 degrees.

Am I correct to assume that you are saying that bibs and leg warmers will work for you, down to about 25-30, and below that you need more?

That makes sense to me. I want to make sure that you weren’t saying that leg warmers go on at 30 or less.

Some cold weather compression bottoms like Under Armour cold gear.

+1

Even some cheap Chinese running tights have worked well for me. Drawstring waistbands prevent sagging, even though they can be less than comfortable.

For those rides when it's below 30 I use thermal tights with a pad in them, plenty of choices out there, with leg warmers under them, or my one pair of windbreak thermal tights.

If you ride a lot in cold weather, thermal tights are a good investment, IMO.

Cheap tights work great. Need not be “cycling specific.”

25-35F is different than 35-45

1) wear them under the bibs

2) get more than one pair of bibs, and just invest in a pair of bib tights. By 'invest' you can find decent bib tights for $100 (or under). Heck I picked up a $40 pair from amazon that work just fine in the 35-45F range....

Yup. If you like your bib shorts, @hexron, there are plenty of tights out there that can be worn over them - you just need a drawstring waist to take care of your issue. If you're really thrifty and handy with a needle and thread, you could probably even make your longjohns work. The kids might say it's ghetto, but you'd get props from me for making it work - just as long as you don't race in them and cause a crash.

You've got to find what works for you. Experiment and have a wardrobe of stuff to mix and match.

Almost every manufacturer of bib shorts makes cycling tights of various weights for situations like this.

I wear leg warmers down to the high 30s. Below that, generic running tights over bibs.

40 degrees is my limit. Anything below that I don't ride outdoors. I'm thin blooded.

There are many bib tight options that are no chamois. Just wear them over your bib shorts.

I have a set of Asics running tights that I use if it's not windy but cold. I also have a pair insulated running tights that use if it's windy or colder than 30 degrees.

I either use bib tights or, if it's quite cold, some very warm non-chamois tights I picked up at MEC a while back. I don't think they are even cycling specific, but they do the job nicely.

there's a reason for a cycling specific tights, the waist is higher around the back so when your body is in a forward/tuck position the waist strap doesn't go down to the butt

how about cycling specific pants? they don't have liners & you won't have redundant bib tops over ea other. my headwind pants are great over my trishorts
