Isn't red label 531 is extra-light? Crisp looking brazing. Spidel labeled Simplex. Picking it up tonight if all goes to plan.

Not a PXN10 but even better, that one is a PY10! The red 531 label and chrome stay ends make it so. Good luck. I hope it works out for you, it’s a special bike. It’s a few years older than mine. With a non-pantographed fork crown and the decal scheme it exhibits, I’d say 1980-81. Here’s my 1983 unrefurbished and as found.

Here is a shot of the later 1983 fork crown to illustrate the difference.

PIcked it up this evening. It included a Motor-bacon Super Sprint which had the correct CTA lightweight saddle. No wheels, but that might be a reason to make a 650b switch.

Congratulations! I was hoping you’d get it. Looks like most of the pricey Spidel components are still hanging on it so that’s awesome. As for the wheels, if it’s like mine the rear hub was a Helicomatic anyway so no big loss. I’m curious about 650b. The bike should fit some fairly wide tires with 700c. Which wheels are you using in your photos?

Thanks. These are some placeholder Specialized/MA40 wheels I recently found at the local thrift store I had in my queue for a re-tension. They're probably be the set I match to the frameset long term, but I have an extra set 650b wheels and a worn out set of Hectres that I may mock up tomorrow.

Great pick up; odd that a bike this nice became this neglected. The bell looks out of place as well. I love my 1982 PXN 10 which is one model down from this. Not the bike I'd choose to go 650b with though. I'll bet it will fit a 28c tire. Alternatively I'd bet you can run fat tubulars (700 x 30) on this bike and have a very plush ride.

Oh wow ! that is a great find . As others have said, it looks to have all the right bits .
Looks like it spent a bit of time in the sun looking at the fade to the decals .
If you get sick of it send it my way !

Great find and I hope it fits you well.

Race geometry on these so hopefully also the nice, long stem stays on board to keep weight on the front tire as intended and the steering calm.

I would go with 25-28mm 700c tires myself.

Rear spacing likely 126mm, is that the case?

I would get some oil soaking into the retrofriction levers to avoid any over-stress to the wrap spring which is unavailable as a replacement part.

Glad to see the seatpost (and stem?) wasn't stuck!

I personally wouldn't do a 650b conversion on a full-on pro bike like this one!!!

I was able to get NOS Retrofriction springs (as well as some missing washers) from Wayne Bingham at Veloclassique last year. But soaking/cleaning is good advice, anyway.

I'm decidedly not a purist, and I (or rather my joints) very much prefer fat, plush tires, but I'm with the others here recommending against a 650b conversion on this one. My guess, given the general geometries of the era, is that even going to 650b you might only get 35c tires to fit (obviously could be wrong here...), at least not without dimpling the chain stays.... And there are no fender eyelets- to my mind, 650b means 'all-road'/long distance/rando'ing, and that means adding fenders!

Decal graphics look identical to those of my old 1980 PKN-10. I gave it to my elder son because the frame was about 2 cm too tall and too long for me.


My old PKN-10, now my son's kiddie-puller, although the boys are getting big for the trailer now.

Have you decided against 700Cx35 tires? That's what my son put on it, for use as a kiddie hauler, back when his boys were small. (They are now 8 and 6 years old and self-powered.) He also greatly appreciated my triple chainring conversion, with a 34/26 low gear.

Strong guess for 650b is max 38mm after crimping, chainstays being the bottleneck.

My rando bike is a step down from yours, a green label 531 PVN10. Very nice ride but starts wobbling/shimmying quite easily when loaded.

Owner of a 1980-ish PXN-10E here. Can confirm what others are saying here. Not really enough chainstay clearance for 650b x 38's after trying it. Currently running Vittoria Corsa 700 x 30mm tires. I think being able to do 32's or 35's would be great. No experience crimping chainstays myself, so not sure if that's a good idea. Also yeah, very susceptible to speed wobble when loaded
