9sp Triple Downtube Shifters
Greetings,
I have a Rivendell Saluki with Shimano 9sp/triple and bar-end shifters. I want to switch to downtube shifters.
I'm curious if the Dura Ace 7700 levers will activate a triple? These levers were intended for aero bars on time trial bikes (doublecrank) as well road/racing bikes (doublecrank.) My front derailleur is pretty middle of the road and activates perfectly with the Shimano bar end shifters.
If not, any other models that come to mind? I want a set of downtube levers that offer friction or index in the rear, but work with a trilecrank.

Any of Shimano (or anyone elses) left barcon will pull enough for a triple, quad, or quint if you can rig up that many chainrings. Hot tip used to be buying two lefts for cheap and using one as a pure friction rear.

I'm looking to get rid of my bar-end (barcon) shifters and use these 7700 Dura Ace downtube shifters.
To the best of your knowledge, when they did the 1997 redesign, did they add (or retain) the left lever's ability to active a triple front derailleur?
It stands to reason that they might have becasue the 7700 also offered Dura Ace Triple in cranks, STI-levers etc....

By the way, some web listings indicate that the SL-7700 downtube levers are 2/9 and other listings indicate that they are 3/9. Anyone know for certain? Many thanks...... -Andrew

What Dylansbob said^^^, any Shimano DT lever can handle a triple.
The triple was not initially part of the 7700 roll-out, it came a couple of years later. 7700/7703 featured the newer actuation for both the rear and front derailers, unlike the pre-9s, 740x stuff.
The 7700 triple required both the 7703 Shifter and 7703 front derailer to index reliably, due to a new (and short-lived) special chainring spacing for the 39t middle ring.

I had some of those DT shifters and ran a half-step +granny triple. It is a friction shifter, no indexing like a brifter.

The answer is yes, a DA7700 left down tube shifter will happily pull across a triple crank. All bueno.
As a side note, have yet to come across ANY Shimano left side friction shifter that will not pull across a triple crank.

Other options for a left shifter...
Shimano SL-R400 2/3x8-shifter SIS (new).

Please note that the OP was looking for shifters that offer both an index and friction option. R400 levers are 8 speed index only; no friction option.
