Looks like others have most of your issues/questions covered - especially the need to prioritize your adjustments with proper saddle/pedal position *first*.

You mentioned that the steering seemed sluggish, especially compared to your single.
Yup. The longer wheelbase, weight/weight distribution, etc., all combine to make the steering seem less responsive. Believe it or not, this is a good thing because it relates to the stability of a tandem's ride.

You'll get used to it after a few rides, especially as you maneuver on different surfaces. As you've probably already discovered from the "correct method", starting and stopping are done from a position of balance and stability. On a single, you can quickly regain stability from an off-balance start with a flick of the bars. If you try that on a tandem you'll... Well, you'll find out!

The REAL surprise will come when, after several rides on the tandem, you get back on your single bike! The steering will seem SO quick that you might think the wheel is coming off.

Enjoy!

So, this seems as on topic as your replies to me. Would it have made you happier if they said low recumbent tandems are more difficult to ride than a taller tandem?

Charles
Thank you for attempting to clarify that. Again, comparing recumbents to uprights is not the gist of this discussion. My comments concerning optimum upright setup do not apply to recumbents either. Take it as such.
