B. Carre with Columbus tubes
I acquired 3 French framesets recently. One a 60s "Bazou" cyclotouring frame, and two Carre framesets, one of which is damaged and one of which is nice. This is the nice one.
It's labeled "Gautheron". Could find nothing of it online, probably a bike shop Carre built a few frames for. It has a tubing sticker on the frame that says "Jeux de tubes Columbus en acier special" ("Columbus special steel tubeset") and on the fork "Fourreaux Columbus" ("Columbus forks").
100mm front / 124mm rear spacing. Campag dropouts and fork ends.
35x1 Campag bottom bracket
28.2 OD seat tube that looks like it takes a 26.6 or 26.8 seatpost, maybe less. With Simplex binding bolt.
Campag Record headset on metric fork. Even getting a 22.0mm stem in there is not working, might need to be sanded or reamed out a bit.
Is this simply metric SL? Anyone seen a "Gautheron" before?

There is metric Columbus tubing. My Alain Michel takes a 26.2. It is Columbus tubed.
Gorgeous Carre, BTW; I like it even more with the obscure shop sticker.

As Poguemahone said, gorgeous. BC built for a lot of shops. I have not seen this one. This is one of his upper end frames. Someone pointed out to me the little squares on the head tube lugs some time ago as being on mostly his TOL stuff. Could you share with me via PM what you paid for this and where you got it? Also the info on the damaged frame. I keep a spreadsheet of Carré and Lejeune sales. My size, it appears.

That would look good with Simplex or Mavic SSC on it. Maybe a Stronglight 106 crank or Tevano if you can find it. I am a big fan of the Pelissier 2000. I think I have five wheelsets that feature them.

J. M. Gautheron shop in Siant Vallier (71230).
This Gautheron bicycle dated by owner as 1977-78 was reportedly constructed by Gerard Gautheron, relation of cycling champion Isabelle Gautheron.

Damn, but I could deal with more threads like this. The eye candy on this thread is way off the charts. The needle's all the way in the red, etc.

@TenGrainBread wonderful find.
Stella made frames in the 70's with Columbus tubing, both full and 3 main tubes.
"3 TUBES RENFORCES" (3 Main Tubes) on an early 70's Stella. The Stella frames were made with heavy gauge Columbus SP tubing - 1.0mm x 0.7mm main tubes. Most later French bikes with Columbus tubing were made with lighter SL - 0.9mm x 0.6mm main tubes
French all Columbus tubing foil sticker like TenGrainBread's frame.
Mid 70's French all Columbus butted main tubes stickers. Around 1975-78.
1978 to early 80's French Columbus stickers.
I have a number of French bikes made of Columbus SL tubing.
My 1984 Gitane Team Pro.
1982 Motobecane Team Champion
French Columbus tube frames in the cue waiting to be built: a 1980 Motobecane Team Champion, an early 80's Mercier and a 1986 Bertin C80-SSC.
Metric Columbus SP frames take a 26.4mm seatpost in a properly rounded seat tube. Metric Columbus SL tubing uses a 26.6mm or 26.8mm seatpost.
@TenGrainBread, a 22.0mm stem should fit without any problem. Remove the headset locknut and check the fit. I always take a smooth round file and put a small chamfer around the opening of the steerer. Make sure that the ID is clean and has no burrs. Run a hone or rolled up sandpaper down the steerer to smooth it out. (you already know this stuff)
On occasions I've had to sand a little material out of the locknut ID so that the stem passes easily through it.
BTW. most of the 22.2mm Nitto stems that I own (N=20+) actually measure 22.1mm and will fit in many French steerers with little or no modification.
