This chart of tubing weights is eye-opening!

I started a new thread because I didn't want to sidetrack the gaspipe thread, but these numbers are interesting. What year is this from? Early '80's maybe?

Check out the weight difference between Tange 1 and 2- Also the comparison of Columbus tubing, Ishiwata and the variants of Reynolds 531.

Great chart, thanks for posting it, Rubberlegs.

The chart must be pre-Columbus SLX, as it's not included....
I suspect it's not that much lighter than SL. but I notice that as I suspected, the SV980 tubing is quite near to what Reynolds 753 weighs..... So it's in good company weight-wise.
I also noticed how really light the best Tange and Ishiwata tubing really are.... So light! Were they special track/keirin tubesets never used on road bikes??

SLX is heavier than SL.

I've read (so it must be true ) that there is and was no standard 531 tube set. The weight listed might be an average. Or it might be way off.

Sure wish there was a chart for the Max weight that the completed frames could tolerate...

Numbers all over the place...and the thinness of some of the tubing...WOW!!! No WONDER it is "Easy" to dent some high end tubing...VERY thin in some areas! A cylinder is strong, but one little ding can really reduce it's strength and cause a failure.

Sekai 5000 is an example of a road bike built with paper-thin 0.3mm tange professional tubing.
https://www.retrobike.co.uk/gallery2/...kai+1.jpg.html

Makes for a very noodly and fragile, dent-prone road bike.

Also makes for the 5000 being even more rare to find these days... thanks for reminding me my journey is not yet complete >.<

I have seen some of those numbers generating by manufacturers and they are so conservative, I shouldn't be allowed on a bike, if they were to be believed.

Not sure what the 531 that Raleigh, et. al were using back in the '70s (before the 'C' etc. designations appeared). I assumed this was standard 531, at the 2,140g weight.

I could very well be wrong, because this is second hand or third hand information, but what I read is that there WAS NO STANDARD tube set, at least with Reynolds. We believed there was, but there wasn't. The builder (Raleigh, whoever) had to specify each tube and perhaps the specs of each tube.

All number with the exception of rider weight were "compiled from sales catalogues and correspondences with. tube manufacturers and importers." Do you suppose these are the equivalent of today's "target weights?" We know how (in)accurate those are.

As for rider weight, he doesn't tell us where he got those numbers.

Thank you for the information and the education, Gentlemen.

Now I ask you, what sort of bicycle do I get that negates the extra ~15 pounds of weight (fat that is) that I carry?

Ooh, I'm almost light enough to ride a SP or 501 frame. Hooray for me.

In fairness, the manufacturers have to assume the worst case, in every respect. when publishing such figures, lest they get sued.

At 235 I'm still to heavy for my SLX PX-10 - RATS!!!

OH Well - My 531 and ChroMo frames have been carrying the load so I can't complain to much but I sure would like to get to that SLX PX-10...

I think that may be a misprint and should be Columbus KL as used on the Colnago Mexicos. I would be surprised if Beppe Saronni weighed 125 or less and it's my understanding that he rode a Mexico!

Maybe there was no "standard" tube set, but AFAIK, the typical selection was 9/6/9 downtube, 8/5/8 top tube, 8/5 seat tube, 0.8 stays and not sure about the fork blades, but I think they only made one thickness of those. This corresponds to the later "531c" tube set. 531st was 10/7/10 in the main triangle, and made for a very "dead" feeling frame, even in my size (65cm - I had one built with that tubing, and was THAT ever a bad choice.)

Oh, and BTW, those wall thicknesses are tenths of mm - Reynolds was at least at that time (70's - 80's) making their tubes to SWG standards, so 8/5/8 would be (I think...) 21/24/21 ga.

I sure hope that SLX frame I'm building up won't crumble to dust underneath me. Not sure whether I'd rather worry about steel collapsing or carbon asploding.
