Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Rotor 11-39 12S With Shimano GRX RX820

Morning!

I just purchased a Canyon Grizl AL 7. It has the 12 speed GRX groupset. My previous bike was the previous Gen Grizl AL 7 with the 11 speed groupset. I was using the Shimano 11S 11-40 cassette on that bike (2X setup 46-30 cranks) and I absolutely Loved my climbing gear with the 11-40 cassette. With the 12S on my new bike it comes with the 11-36 cassette and that’s just not quite enough for the steep gravel roads. I’m wondering if there is anyone here who has used the Rotor 11-39 12S cassette with a 2X Shimano GRX groupset. Or for that matter, any 12S cassette in the range of 11-38 to 11-40 with GRX groupset and Shimano HG Freehub.

Thanks!!

I think Canyon put on a 36T because that is the official max T spec for that derailleur, according to Shimano. Given everyone's experience with the 11-speed (which easily handles 40T with a turn of the B-screw), you should be fine. The range on their two 1X 12-speed rear derailleurs is significantly greater (lower), so at worst, you might have to avoid the big-big cross-chain position.

Hmm. I have the GRX 12 speed driveline on my bike, but the GRX system uses MTB gear spacing, meaning I needed to get a Micro Spline free hub for the 12 speed cassette.

Some of the newer 2x12 GRX drivetrains use the HG Hub. I’m currently looking at a Cannondale Topstone with a 2x12, the cassette is a 11-34T.

That seems to be the case only for the 1x 12-speed GRX RD-RX822-GS/SGS? The 2x 12-speed GRX RD-RX820 is officially rated for a 36T max cog which is found on a CS-HG710-12 cassette that fits on an HG freehub.
