Narrow chain 6 speed

I have a 6 speed friction setup that has a 10spd Veloce (medium cage) rear derailleur. Can I get away with a narrower chain to better suit the rear derailleur cage spacing/pulley setup? Ok to run a 6/7/8?

I have everything installed sans the chain-

Any issues? Recommendations?

Whoops, misread... Saw "derailleur" and read "cassette"...

Unless the pulley cage is too narrow, your garden variety 8sp chain should work.

For a while, I was running a Microshift 9/10 speed rear mech with an 8s chain and a 7s freewheel, and it worked fine to index back there. I'd think it's worth trying an 8s chain before trying anything else.

.
...I routinely install and use a KMC X8.93 on all my six and seven cogged bicycles.
They are relatively cheap on Amazon, and work well for me, with a variety of shifting components and freewheel cogs.

Same here.

I have also used Campagnolo C9 chain on a Varsity and a Supersport, both with standard-spaced Japanese 6s freewheels, and using the original Ashtabula cranksets. No problems at all with either of them them over some thousands of spirited foothills riding.
