Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Had to make the call of shame this morning. Got a flat 5 mi out and my second tube had a big hole, despite being unused. There were no offers from my four companions.

That's very sad.

Not related to pushing hard, but definitely related to exercise per se?

Are you scoping out potential retirement areas?? Some folks like the Eastern Shore of Maryland and I believe Delaware was voted one of the best states to retire to. Kinda flat but you can't have it all.

I always have a few peel/stick patches with me to avoid such events. You may want to add them to your quiver.

Mrs. GJ and I have a firm "Nowhere South of the Mason Dixon Line" policy. Though I actually like Northern Maryland. It's the terrain I grew up around.

The "old guy" of our Wednesday Usual Suspects ride is 78 and starting to show his age on hills and is getting gapped. We wait for him. I am hopeful that I might be able to ride at his current level in 20 years when I turn 78.

He is a good candidate for an e-bike but such a purist I highly doubt he would ever go down that road.

I had a tire pinch flat on me and I didn't notice till I'd ridden over more rocks which gave me two more pinch flats. Ended up using 3 or 4 peel 'n' stick patches then.

Yeah, I used to carry a patch kit and used it often, but I find they're hit or miss with today's tubes or my waning skills or something. I tried to patch the tube that flatted this a.m., and it didn't take. The second tube had a giant tear very near the valve, so was not a candidate for the procedure.

If I remember correctly, I never had great results with glue-less patches.

The 2023 world champion 80 age group is a local rider. He is a super strong dude for his age, but it takes him a little bit to get started. Not uncommon for him to fall off the back and then fly by us when slow down for him to catch up. The only thing that makes me nervous, he doesn’t seem to care at all about cars. Makes no effort to move out of the way. I pray he doesn’t become a statistic on the bike.

I feel for you, Friend. One of my biggest fears is that after 40+ years of riding that some issue will arise that makes me quit riding. Like others have said, I hope you get things straightened out or find solutions to continue your riding pursuits.

I got smoked by an 81 years old this morning on a short punchy rise.

There's always Barbie. The fighting mostly consists of dance-offs, though there are also some sportsballs hurled in anger.

Hey - you weren't around to recommend and/show me to any coffee spots in Peoria a few days ago. For shame.

Kind of on that note, I went to my Tixkokob lbs last week, for a couple extra tubes. The only presta tubes they had were 29ers, and there were no road tubes at all. The last of the Mohicans
