Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wheelset Compatibility With Groupset

I am shopping for new wheels for my Giant Contend AR4 and had about settled on a set of Fulcrum Racing wheels and then saw that they are listed for 10-11 speed. Other wheels I have looked at do not refer at all to the number of speeds. I have a Claris 8 speed groupset, so I looked at a few others and could not find any that specifcally indicated they were for 8 speed. I have not looked at every wheelset out there in my price range but I want to ask you folks a question before searching any more.

Is this a situation where I can go with a lower number of speeds but not higher, or do I need to find a set specifically designated for 8 speeds?

Typically for Shimano, the freehub body (the one that the cassette goes on) works for 8/9/10 speed all the same, but I will wait for better minds to confirm.

You would need to see if there is a hub body that would support your 8 Speed setup based on your hub internals.

I believe it will work fine with the proper 8 speed low spacer in back of the cassette. Wheels with freehubs that are 8,9,10 compatible no spacer needed. Wheels that are rated up to 11 speed need that spacer on the freehub so the indexed shifting will line up properly.

All you have to add is the 1.85mm freehub spacer. My wife has the Liv AR4 (same as the men’s Contend) and when I got her a hand built Kinlin wheelset from PWB, I opted for the Bitex hubs. The rear had the M11 freehub so I just installed that spacer.

New Fulcrum 11 speed wheels will probably come with a spacer. My Fulcrum racing 3, intended for up to 11 speed Shimano came with one and I use 9 speed on it with the spacer. I'm pretty sure the same spacer works for 8 speed.

Does someone have a chart to show which freehubs require which spacers for which cassettes?
