end caps confusion
I'm about to install new brake and gear cables on my road bike. I got the new cables and found a punch of different end caps included - some short plastic ones, some metal caps, some long and elongated. I am clueless... Could someone please help or direct me to a page, where I could find some information?

You talking ferrules for the housing , or the crimp cap you put on the end
of the cable after you cut it?
(and haven't soldered the end of the cable before you cut it, instead)
as Usual a picture is worth a 1000 words ..

The small caps that I should put after I cut the cable. My old cables (from 1990s) had all just one type of caps (1cm long cylindrical caps with a tiny hole for the cable) and now there is suddenly quite a choice.

The following information is for typical Shimano setups.
Brake cable housing generally uses the steel looking ferrulues except at ergo levers which use no ferrules. Shifter cable housings generally use plastic looking ferrules except at the rear derailleur where an aluminum looking ferrule is used.
