Freely chosen cadence appears to respond to changes in CIL. This by the way is why you generally can't take your "freely chosen" cadence on an indoor trainer at a given power level and transfer it to an outdoor ride on a real road--unless the trainer has a huge flywheel the amount of CIL will typically be lower than what you experience on the road, and CIL varies on the road while on most trainers it's fixed.
