2013 CAAD 10 5 Brakes

Recently purchased a 2013 CAAD 10 5 and after swapping out the saddle with a Specialized Romin Evo Comp, I've been pleased with one exception. I feel that the brakes aren't as effective in dry conditions (don't no wet yet) as I would like. Are there known issues with the stock Tektro R580 brakes or brake pads? Any other suggestions?

I've heard they are fine but the first thing I did was change out the brakes on my and my wife's 2012 to Ultegra. I did buy a 2013 that I haven't changed the brakes but I haven't ridden that one yet.

Change the brake pads. Going down an overpass (we don't have hills down here), I noticed how underpowered the brakes were when fully applied pressure would not stop the bike fast enough. Can't really imagine an actual hilly place in a steep decent. I changed them and then they worked great.

Change the brake pads for an 80% improvement.

Change the calipers for an extra 20%.

I want to put new calipers and pads on my CAAD 7, my bike is equipped with 105/Ultegra so I was thinking of just picking up either 105 or Ultegra Calipers....not sure what pads to go with though, seems the kool stop salmons get great reviews....any advice would be appreciated.

edit: my bike currently has cannondale calipers and half worn Shimano pads.

As others have replied, change out the pads for a better set, there are several aftermarket pads better than the Tektros. There was a thread here in the 41 about this problem last spring, many had swapped out the Tektro brakes for Shimano 105 or TRP calipers. You might do a search for the thread to see what was said. Nice bike, I love my 10 4.

If you upgrade calipers make sure they match your cable pull ratio of the 5700 levers. TRP while being the higher end line for Tektro is nothing like the base tektros and I really like their products.

I bought the same bike, 2013 10 5 this summer and never thought twice about the braking power UNTIL I took my bike down to North Carolina to ride some big hills. The friends I was riding with were flying down the hills faster than I and braking a lot harder, but I didn't feel confident on the downhills. I'm not sure if it was my riding confidence (first summer back on a bike in 15 years) or the brakes.

I'm typically a flatlander (riding in northwest Ohio), but based on the comments here I'd probably swap out the pads before the next trip with hills.

Can never hurt to throw down ~$20 (I think) and get some Kool Stop brake pads.

My LBS doesn't carry them, they only carry Shimano pads. I got my Kool stop salmons off eBay...4 pads for only $15 shipped.

Switched the brake pads to Dura-Ace and it made a world of difference.

The CAAD actually outdates the supersix. The supersix's geometry is identical to the CAAD's. Clearly, the CAAD lent it's incredible race geometry to the supersix.

Here is my 2013 Silver and Black and my 2012 White.








I posted the white one before but I added the SLK crank. I bought but have not installed the GP 4000s tires for the white one. I've only had the black one for a couple of weeks. The only changes I made to it are the K-Elite wheels and the Dura-ace brake pads. I also adjusted the angle of the seat.

Oh, that's just a decal on the head tube.
