A lovely Saturday morning at the LBS

My plan for this morning was to get a haircut and do the week's shopping after that.

As I was waiting for my turn at the barber's I realized that I wanted a nice new pair of tires and that I was close to former Dutch track champion Klaas Balk's bike shop, so I decided in favor of a small detour.
I'd been there before: a nice large shop that caters to the racing crowd as well as the general public.

I found a pair of Gommitalia Targa K's. At 180 grams they probably won't last longer than a couple of laps around the block, but hey, you only live once. And they come in a nice tin can.

But when the shop assistant gathered that they were going on a vintage bike, he said "wait, have a cup of coffee", got me the afore-mentioned cup of coffee and trundled off.

After ten minutes or so he came back with his boss, who appeared to be a Campagnolo collector. We had a nice chat, and after a while he invited me to come up and have a look at the collection in his office.
I duly complied, and I was impressed by a stack of beautiful wooden boxes full of Campagnolo derailleurs (saw my first Sportman!), but my gaze was almost immediately drawn to the bike hanging on the wall: an early Ortelli, probably built by this guy's father:

Vito Ortelli (1940's Italian champion):

It was busy in the shop and he needed to get back to work, so we exchanged coordinates and I left, but not before I'd taken a picture of the Ortelli.

It was a lovely morning.

I had that once, on one of my visits to the States. I remember rather liking it.

I had eggs, an English muffin, and some berries. AND I went to a bike shop - but didn't buy anything. I was looking at frame pumps for my newly acquired Lemond Zurich.

I had a cheese danish and an Americano here at my local coffee shop. And I'm still here, just wasting my day behind the computer screen...

That is a gorgeous bike. Is anyone here man enough to shift a Cambio Corsa?

Great lbs story.

I swung by Grand Performance after our ride the morning.

They had the new Soma Vitesse tires in stock, which saves me from ordering them online.

Always happy to spend the money locally when possible.

I'll pass! Cool tidbit of bike engineering. For anyone reading and asking, "what the hell?", here's some reading material you may find fascinating and educational: The Cambio Corsa: Campagnolo's Early*Masterpiece

That Ortelli looks pretty cool, but also pretty small. I just did a giant cheese Danish yesterday, yum. I could "probably" shift a Cambio Corsa, if not for my irrational fear of sticking my fingers in the spokes, even on regular downtube shifters.

Always a pleasure when you drop in with a bike story from " over there "!

my fair was a wheat muffin with turkey and Swiss washed down with good ol' Maxwell House coffee before heading out on a trip around town, then another stop at a coffee shop.

i am looking at the spoke protected behind the freewheel and swear I have that exact style on a Gnutti hub.

I go take pic after dinner.

I dunno, but I'd sure like to give it a shot. Try anything once.

Breakfast Report: Pot of Earl Grey tea, two donuts, one apple.

I'm stuck at work today but managed to take in an 8-mile lunch ride to go look at a leather sofa that an old co-worker is giving away.

Man, I vacuumed the house, caught up my email, and looked for some Campag pedals, you beat my day all to pieces. Great post! I want to live where you live, Blue Angels PR posters are all you see in every shop, including our office. Great aviators and precise as it gets, but I can see them every week. That heritage cycling stuff just isn't here at all.

Good story, very nice bike. I had oatmeal with raisins and visited my LBS for new SPD multi-release cleats.

Thanks for the story & pics, non-fixie. They are sure nice folks to take an interest in vintage.

That tin must be good for something...

After doing a 1 hour workout on my 78 Moto GJ and getting the weekly shopping out of the way, I had my usual full english breakfast (sausage, eggs, beans, mushrooms & tomatoes)... Oh, and a beer or three. Pics to follow. 😉
