Picked up a 1981 Miyata 1000 back in early May. Gave it a good wash and it all seems to be in good order, except the freewheel is a bit growly. Thankfully I had a 2 prong puller in my toolbox so the freewheel is off now. Trying the fill and flush with light oil method to see if that will quiet it down. Removed the "flick-stand" that was on the downtube because I didn't like how it covered up the Miyata logo.
Freewheel flush
Flick Stand
Looks better without it
After a wash and back together. The freewheel is quieter.

Progress Report.
I Hate Waiting... Everything I need to do anything is not here, all is at the frame builder. I have weeded the front yard, trimmed the trees, did the laundry to keep the wife happy, and walked the dogs. nothing bicycle related has happened...
So here is a picture of the AlAn Record on the day it became a bicycle... Three years ago.

Bled a Magura hydro rim brake caliper on a Cervelo TT bike...ick, the "blue" fluid was brown and bubbly...very nice now.
Disassembled and rebuilt a Venge, also replaced the cracked seat post...shouldn't crank down on it that hard. It came out great and a happy customer.
Upgraded my Aethos from 11 speed mech Ultegra with TRP mech disk brakes to full kit of 105 Di2...quite pleased.

A new $25 project I just picked up last night by chance. We were picking up a vintage dresser and my wife made the mistake of saying, "You don't have any bikes?" LOL. She was just shaking her head as I wheeled out a bike from the back...#6

BB turned out to be English. Water bottle braze-ons definitely lopped/ground off. The screw holes remain, which got pointed out me are off-center. Water bottle cages had been installed using machine screws (cages now re-purposed).
NOW: how to fill in those holes and smooth over (I'll use bolt on cage holders, etc.). I plan on having the frame media blasted so I can prime and repaint.
Thanks, DA

My first try at lug lining, using a Fluid Writer knock off and some cheap 'gold' paint.
It looks fine from a distance, not so great close up though
I've got some One Shot metallic gold in the post, difficult to get in the UK, but that should be better.
Next practise is a red/white head tube with fancy lugs and cutouts I should learn something.
On the other hand the red pearl looks damn fine.

Dang. You just gave me a good idea for one of the sporty city bikes I just agreed to make for a friend and his wife. Thanks!

Raleigh Gran Sport Gravel Project
I love reading the various threads both on BF and the web about people building vintage bikes into gravel bikes. I decided to use a Raleigh Gran Sport to build into a gravel bike since it has ample clearance for reasonable volume tires. I'm running 700 x 35c Schwalbe Marathon Racer tires. 35c will work for my purposes. The dropout was drewed so I have to run the derailleur on a hanger which will make it hard I think to run a 38c tire. I've picked out the parts for the build; overhauled the bottom bracket, headset, and hubs; and cleaned up the frame as well. I'll run a stronglight 99 crank with 47/34 rings and a Sachs Maillard 23-30 7 speed freewheel.

In the process of building up a bicycle for the neighbor's tall grandkid from a bare frame and parts. Going slow but OK so far.
But I want to show the gang something else.
This afternoon while hunting (unsuccessfully so far) for important files, I opened a box I hadn't looked in for quite a while. It turned out to be several artifacts from my early 1980s riding days. Let's take a look:
My old Detto shoes with the nail-on plate. I'd forgotten I had switched to an adjustable bolted cleat after the original fixed nailed-on cleat wore out. These shoes probably have many thousands of miles and a few (very few) race victories in their past.
My souvenir bottle from the '82 Arizona Challenge ride. None other than Lon Haldeman reputedly called that ride the hardest one-day ride he'd done up to that date - it wasn't the 17,000 feet of climbing, but the 20+ mph headwinds for the middle third of the ride. I put in a couple hundred that day and got to Prescott at sunrise, and didn't feel like I hadn't given it my all.
This very nondescript bottle is actually a treasured artifact. I obtained it on a warm day in Mission Viejo in the summer of 1984 when it came flying out of the mens' road race pack at the Olympics. I think it was tossed by a New Zealander, but I'm not sure.
Back to working on the bike...

Here's my latest.
A 1971 Schwinn Racer 3 speed.
I installed a 24 tooth rear cog to give it better gear ratio. With this low is good for hills 2 for level and 3 for down hill.
I figure the Schwinn "racing saddle has to be at least as comfortable as the old Messinger.

Coincidence - this morning I dragged home a Coppertone 1964 Traveler. No wrenching on it yet but it is complete and has the original Schwinn tire on the front.
