Hopefully somebody else who know why this gooseneck was so tall. I did not like it when I first got it. but over the years I have come to love it.
but to this day I have never seen any other bike setup like this one

this would have been available in in dec 85 then right. I am still looking for my paperwork on this bike. I know its a bit beat up & dirty right now but it cleans up great.

I love this thread from what I am understanding my fisher was not really a Ritchey or Teesdales bike but more like a fisher import? that the frame design probability was done on a computer?
is this correct? if so, should I be starting a new thread if I am wanting to know more about my 86 fisher Procaliber?

ScottB you indicated that you have had this bike since new so then only you know the origin of that “stem” … a small expander stub is specified on the imported 1985 Excaliburs and 1986 ProCalibers for use with the clamp on Bullmoose bars, what you have is definitely not stock.

I'm going to say that wasn't stock. Not really an enhancment for off road.

this is the way I got the bike and it was new when my dad give it to me Dec 1985.

Definitely not stock. No full-size bikes came equipped with such a part from the factory.

I remember when that steerer tube extension showed up in the wholesale catalogs that our bike shop used for ordering parts and accessories. (The shop owner jokingly chided me for not having thought of the idea first.)

That would have been right around 1985. My guess: the shop where your dad bought the bike had just bought some of those steerer extensions from their parts supplier, and one of the shop's workers mentioned the part enthusiastically to your dad.

Must admit, I’d like to see the top of this “stem” or is it a piece of pipe silver soldered (or hammered) into steerer? I’d also like to see a mid-80s catalog with such an extension stem being offered as I don’t recall one from this time period OR see one in my collection of parts catalogs…two sizes of “Nitto Single Expander” stubs for mounting clamp on bars but thats it. You have to remember that clamp on bars at this time were limited to high end bikes. Even though the Excalibur/ProCaliber were imports they were designed as race bikes and offered at a price well above other imports. Where was the market for such an extension at the time? Was somebody really thinking that a buyer was going to fork out $850 (1985 introductory price of brand new Excalibur, soon to be $995) for a top tier mountain bike and then make it less offroadable? Just don’t see a market here. Now, if somebody had flexibility/mobility issues, I could see such a mod from new but that would strictly be a custom thing.

thank you Trakhak maybe that is what happened. as for Markeologist "Must admit, I’d like to see the top of this “stem” I will update with some photos. I have never had it apart so I think its past due.. I will update with better pic's of the stem off the bike. I still have not found my paperwork I got with this bike but I'm still looking

here are some photo's it looked like to me anyways that this was stock. it had the same stamp marks as other parts on my bike.

Can we get a photo of the whole stem off of bike and cleaned up? Together as well as the separate pieces pulled apart? How does the black tube connect with silver piece (assume quill) with stamping? Kind of looks like a Nitto stub with a section of black pipe placed on it.

you seem to have a lot knowledge on bikes so thank you for your reply. I would try to answer what you asked but not knowing what different attachment's are named for a part I have never seen before is a bit tuff for me sorry about that I am hoping my updated pic's will answer everything you need to know
