Spoke Head Orientation at Hub

A couple of years ago I bought, for a very good price off Craigslist, a new complete front wheel with a Shimano Deore hub and Velocity Dyad rim with a mounted and unused Rivendell Jack Brown tire. Fast forward to now and I'm getting ready to put the wheel to use. Looking at the Hub, I notice that on one flange, all the spoke heads are oriented to the inside. That is, all the spokes were inserted from the inside to the the outside, with all the heads on the inside. The other flange is laced as I would expect, with half the heads on the inside of the flange and the other half outside. Is there any reason to build a wheel this way? I'm thinking I need to fix this so I'll dismantle the wheel and relace. Thoughts?

Thank you for your wisdom and wit.

Is the side that's all heads in laced radial? It is common practice to have all spokes on the same side of the flange in that case, However, if it's laced radial on the non drive side (Would definitely not recommend on the drive side for that hub) it would be better to have heads out to reduce the bracing angle to share more of the load.

hmm. why would you have radial spoking on one side of the front wheel only ?

I've seen it more than once on a disc brake front hub. Otherwise, you're right, no point in it.

yes, I thought about disk hubs, altho it's still a poor choice IMO. Means that the 18 spokes on the side of the hub that is tangentially laced will carry all the braking loads. Makes zero sense.

Reasons to do this:
1. Looks / style
2. Show off wheel building chops
3. Insufficient inventory of spokes of correct length
4. Some kind of clearance issue with a fork appurtenance.

Speaking of #3, you’ll need new spokes to rebuild this with lacing.
