I happened to watch Oprah a few minutes ago and her topic today was about happiness.
She told everyone that according to studies, San Luis Obispo, CA is the most happiest place on earth. She then said, one of the reasons that contribute to its reputation is because of how bike-friendly the place is.
She then said, cycling makes people happy and when you are cycling, you produce endorphins, causing you to be happy.
Are you happy after/during a bike ride?
I know one thing, that If I can't bike a particular day, I'm not happy.

I'm not sure if anyone has said this yet, but whenever you are exercising, you are releasing endorphins. Also, most of the people that cycle to work seem to enjoy cycling, so they would naturally be happy. I've noticed that I feel good whenever I exercise, but I love even more it when I bike.

SLO rules. Great riding, great weather, access to great wine, great food, great microbrews, and great waves, access to a steady stream of pretty young coeds... It's like Portland without the rain and homeless people.
And Prefumo Canyon Road ain't bad either...

I would have to say that the unhappiest years of my life were when I lived in SLO. That was also when I was a poverty-stricken grad student, so that might have had something to do with it. Oh yeah, and the ex...

I'm guessing you've lived there your whole life and don't know how much the rest of the world sucks compared to SLO.

I hope I didn't overuse the word "great" in my description, because it really is an excellent town. If you visit SLO, stop by Cambria Bikes and ask for their cyclo-tourist map. It's free and it has all kinds of great suggested routes. Spending only one weekend riding there is like being allowed only two hours in the Louvre.
Every Thursday night they have a festival/farmer's market that is eye-deep in college-aged hotties. There's also a free bicycle valet there, and every kind of smoked meat and crazy ethnic food you care to try. If it weren't for my current job & mortgage, I'd find a way to move there.
It's about an hour from Jalama Beach (one of the best surfing spots I've ever seen) and about a half an hour in the other direction from the wineries of Paso Robles. I only went to four different bars, which really isn't a big enough sampling, but none of them were filled with overbearing ******bags sipping apple-tinis and talking over each other into their cellphones like LA and an increasing number of spots down here in SD have.

Looking at a map, SLO is pretty far inland for good surfing...is there something I'm missing?
I'm heading to Cali this spring for some riding and need a good place to go, this may be a good one.

In addition to Jalama, there are some great peaks at Montana de Oro which is just 15 miles down the hill from downtown SLO, and I've never been there, but Point Avila is probably a good spot, depending on the swell direction.

I lived in SLO for a long time. I prefer Atascadero, Paso, Etc. It is too overcast every day in SLO (I am solar powered and love the sun) and too many fricken college kids!! 
The study surprises me though. The Central Coast is very expensive, not a lot of jobs, lots of fog and overcast, and the roads are narrow and tend to be pretty unsafe in areas. I have to admit though, the Central Coast is my favorite part of Cali except for the Eastern Sierras.
Happiness is where you make it I guess. I couldn't be happier than I am now. It is the most poor I have ever been in the past 15 yrs, economy sucks here but things seem to be great. Hmmm.
