Cycling across the US
Does anyone know of a forum that is dedicated to those who have or want to cycle across the US? I have been checking in the regional forum and have not found any discussion on it. An advanced search does not do much.

I second Crazy Guy On A Bike. Real time, real life adventures ongoing. Tremendous help to those thinking of touring pretty much anywhere.

+1 crazyguyonabike.com: Bicycle Touring: A place for bicycle tourists and their journals
I like to pull up an interesting tour journal and click on "printable version." This presents the journal as a single page (if not too outrageously big). Then I save the page as an archive with photos. Now it's ready to read offline.

There's also the touring forum on this site.
Adventure Cycling Association Forum - Index has lots of well-organized sub-fora. Many of the questions are well thought out, and some of the responses are as well. Adventure Cycling has mapped 3.5 cross country routes, and the maps are well worth the price if you're taking one of those routes.

Overthinking it is unnecessary. 40 years ago, after having not-ridden for a few years, I bought a used Schwinn Super LeTour 12.2 (made by Azuki in Japan) and a Blackburn rack. I strapped an old Boy Scout external frame pack to the rack, rode from Iowa to DC; the rain and hills of West Virginia were tough, but it was an adventure.

IMHO...what makes it a special epic adventure is planning your own route. There's a lot country out there and you'll meet good people off the beaten path.

I find crazy guy on a bike to be an incredible time sink. People do list their equipment, that's pretty useful. The touring forum her has lots of good stuff, the equipment discussions are annoying though.
