Late 80s Shimano/Mavic Racer, Possibly a Neutral Service Bike?
Found this in a local junk shop. It's set up for a pro with a long stem and insanely high gearing. It comes with an extra set of Campy wheels and lots of extra rims. Brakes and derailleurs are Shimano 600. I'm told the crank is a very desirable Mavic. Hubs are DuraAce. The worst thing about it is it fits me perfectly except for the long stem. He's asking $600 with the extra wheels and rims. Condition is excellent. I pumped up the old tires and it's a great ride, but steep hills are out of the question with the current gearing. I don't need another bike, I just can't stop thinking about this thing.

Give in to the call, go get er'! Looks like a Mid 80's Trek frame of some kind and with the quality parts and extra's the price seems reasonable to me.
The saddle and spoke protector on the rear wheel seem out of place though.

I bought it. Could this possibly be Chris Horner's bike? I'm 5'9 and it fits me like a glove.

Another data point: The brakes are set up backward. Don't they do that in Japan? Horner was born in Japan but I don't know if he grew up there.

I can't find this serial number, 403097 anywhere. What the heck is this? A 770? I read the higher numbers were made in Asia.

I've been wrenching and researching this thing for a week. It's an 89 Trek 400, the year Trek changed the 400 to "criterium geometry." I replaced the gorgeous 130mm Cinneli stem stem with an SR 100mm. The lovely little Dura Ace 12-19 freewheel is now a heavy but great shifting Chinese 14-28. The goofy Scott wrap around handlebars were replaced with Nitro Olypiade 115. There's new blue Shimano brake and derailleur cables and housing. The SR seatpost was replaced with a super light Campagnolo Aero. Seat is Chinese carbon fiber that weighs 134 grams and fits my butt. Fresh tires and tubes, SPD pedals. I'm still trying to find out if Chris Horner raced this in his late teens, but in the mean time, it's an incredible ride and looks pretty badass despite the shorter stem and the massive freewheel.
