2023 Bridge Pedal in Portland

This annual event held today in Portland is all about bikes on bridges. The city closes portions of, or all of, 7 bridges across the Willamette River, which I'm sure does not amuse people trying to get through Portland by car during the event. In fact, while flying down off the Marquam Bridge on the closed portion of the I405 freeway, I thought, hey look, we're going faster than traffic on the other part of the freeway! Then I remembered that the cars are crawling along BECAUSE half of the freeway is closed. Doh! Don't make eye contact!

Although some of the bridges already have nice bike lanes, the two stars of the event are the Marquam and Fremont bridges, where they close the entire top deck to freeway traffic and let the bikes have all the room we need. The climb up the ramps to those bridges is no joke but the ride down the other sides is a blast.

Below, top to bottom and left to right:

Sellwood Bridge, which is south of downtown
Hawthorne Bridge, which is downtown
Hawthorne Bridge, where a layer of corrogated cardboard for our bikes has been laid down over the steel-grate road bed
Ross Island Bridge, which is south of downtown
Top deck of the Marquam Bridge, which is downtown and normally carries southbound I405 traffic.
Top deck of the Fremont Bridge, which is north of downtown and normally carries southbound I5 traffic.

Last year my gf and I rode a bunch of those bridges in traffic. It was a wonderful experience!

Waterloo bridge, London. And no that is not a lifebuoy, they are some new polished silver H+Son Archetype rims tied to my backpack for a new wheel build. A score from Condor Cycles in Grays Inn Road in north London, selling nice bikes and kit to cyclists in London since 1948. Cycling the 4 miles back home south of the river I had to keep reminding myself they were back there, and not try and filter through any narrow gaps

Well, I tried to get over the "Cut Bridge" in Gloucester, but had to wait for boat traffic.

Commuter out for Lunch

Out for lunch on a work-from-home day, this pedestrian bridge helps me over I-94 all the time. Recently rebuilt this into a slightly more go-fast version and I'm just so pleased with it.

If you were in a movie, you would have ridden at top speed and jumped it. And, snapped the picture while airborne.

well, I've posted a shot that was more "bikes under bridges", so maybe "bikes near bridges" is close enough??

Bridge at the Kromme Mijdrecht pumping station. It has a capacity of 8,652 cubic feet and keeps our feet dry in the polder.

Not technically on the bridge but that’s because the handrail is more of a suggestion than a safety devise.

I don’t want to go getting my bike from the bottom.
